hello I am installing Bugzilla on the apache web server
I think I did the homework correctly I think, namely I updated the httpd.conf file according to section

http://www.bugzilla.org/docs/2.18/html/configuration.html

still, the test I get

[root@rdsrv bugzilla]# /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -k stop
httpd (pid 19393?) not running
[root@rdsrv bugzilla]# /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -k start
[root@rdsrv bugzilla]# ./testserver.pl http://192.168.1.254/bugzilla
TEST-OK Webserver is running under group id in $webservergroup.
TEST-OK Got padlock picture.
TEST-FAILED Webserver is fetching rather than executing CGI files.
Check the AddHandler statement in your httpd.conf file.

I looked around the usenet but it seems no strong solution has been proposed ...

thanks much for the reply

You surely did something wrong, a little typo is enough for fetching
vs. executing cgi files, therefore double check your configuration and
post it here, so we can check to. Some days ago a similar problem
was script vs. scripts in the line AddHandler cgi-script .cgi.

hello thorsten
I also think it is a silly error indeed... all of this looks so simple ..

below my httpd.conf

I'm no httpd-pro and can't see any obvious error. I would remove the
.pl extension, as it is not needed, and maybe change Options in the
directory block for DocumentRoot to see if it influences your
directory block. Regarding the docs it shouldn't but I would expect
that your settings are working, too. The mapping of Alias to directory
seems to work, as you get contents at all, mod_mime seems to be loaded
as well. Options and AddHandler are my suspects... There's another
commented AddHandler statement, may this override yours somehow or
yours isn't recognized at all?

hello torsten
thanks much for looking into this. I followed your suggestions but it does not work yet ...

I am guessing it is an issue with cgi ownership and permission

could it be?

i linked bugzilla directory into htdocs
if i remove the link the check fails differently

TEST-FAILED Fetch of images/padlock.png failed
Your web server could not fetch http://192.168.1.254/bugzilla/images/padlock.png.

it looks like the code

<Directory /usr/local/bugzilla>
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
Options +Indexes +ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.cgi
AllowOverride Limit FileInfo Indexes
</Directory>

is ignored!!!, right?

i.e. if apache find a link to the bugzilla directory I am at least able to get a listing of its content
if i remove the link I get a 'not found error' as soon as i type http://localhost/bugzilla/

With wrong permissions I would have expected that httpd throws an
error like 500 or else because of missing permission, as in any other
case were one wants to execute a script or binary without execute
permissions, but in your case httpd just doesn't try to execute the
files. There's surely something wrong in the config, not with the
permissions, as even checksetup.pl sets them.

You may try the mod_perl configuration for Bugzilla, as it configures
httpd itself. Just comment your own directory block and use the
following. You would need mod_perl enabled, of course.

PerlSwitches -w -T
PerlConfigRequire /var/www/html/bugzilla/mod_perl.pl

http://www.bugzilla.org/docs/4.2/en/html/configuration.html

Besides that, your configuration looks like a stand alone httpd
without installing from your package system? Maybe you should try with
one from your package manager as they often provide mod_perl and
useful default configuration.

It may be ignored for the call of http://localhost/bugzilla because in
this case you don't have the path given, but it should be ignored on a
call to http://xyz/bugz, because of the following line:

Alias /bugz /usr/local/bugzilla

Said that, testserver requests /bugzilla, not /bugz, open /bugz in the
browser and the what happens.

ok, i removed the alias and i have just these Directory directories
this should work, IMO, since this tell apache to look at /usr/local/bugzilla
<Directory />
AllowOverride none
Require all denied
</Directory>
<Directory /usr/local/bugzilla>
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
Options +Indexes +ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.cgi
AllowOverride Limit FileInfo Indexes
</Directory>

still does not work :(
at the moment i would not go with mod_perl: it looks like i have to reisatall apache w/o the keepalive option and mod_perl is memory consuming ...

thx

But the alias wasn't the problem, you just called the wrong URL for
which your directory block was useless because it's not a child of
your DocumentRoot where you placed the link to the Bugzilla directory
in.

> and i have just these Directory directories
> this should work, IMO, since this tell apache to look at /usr/local/bugzilla

But you don't call a URL which maps to this directory. What you call
is a directory in DocumentRoot and the directory block for this
directory is used, resulting an fetching rather executing the files.

> still does not work :(

Bring back the alias and call the url with /bugz and see what happens.

ok
i added the alias and i got

You don't have permission to access /bugz on this server.

One more experiment: I copied /usr/local/bugzilla into htdocs and http://localhost/bugzilla/ . I get the directory listing but cgi's are not executed

If I change the directory statement to

<Directory /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/bugzilla>
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
Options +Indexes +ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.cgi
AllowOverride Limit FileInfo Indexes
</Directory>

and http://localhost/bugzilla/ I got the listing of the bugzilla initial perl script (which is not executed yet ,,)
this mnakes nos ense to me (probably I am not so godd with apache handling, I admit ... :( )

This depends on your installation, normally /etc/httpd is a system
wide installation managed by the package manger. If you edited
/usr/local/apache2/conf/*, then it shoudl stay there and you have to
make sure your binary uses it, which is default if you start
/usr/local/apache/bin/* etc.

With or without your former directory block? If with, there's only
Ordner and Allow-statements missing.

<Directory /usr/local/bugzilla>
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl
Options +Indexes +ExecCGI
DirectoryIndex index.cgi
AllowOverride Limit FileInfo Indexes
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

MAybe Require all granted or something like that.
