Firefox: What the heck?

After being away from my desktop for a few hours, I return to find
Firefox unusable and unclosable, to say nothing of massively sluggish.
If I Alt=TAB, or Alt+F1 and go back to Internet / Firefox, all I hear
is:

If I Alt=TAB, or Alt+F1 and go back to Internet / Firefox, all I hear
is:
"browser frame 43 unfocused dialogs."
What the heck? And, more importantly, what do I do -- short of
Alt+Ctrl+Backspace?
