Hello MOSS List,

My name is Antonio Tenorio and I am contacting you as member of two projects applying to the next Mozilla Open Source Support program (Mission Partners track).

We have some questions about how to apply in order to have higher chances to be selected:
  • Who is the best person to apply to MOSS, a visible person or someone with more development experience?
  • For a project that is not yet well known, is it better to ask less money? Of course the money will be adjusted to the desired project outcomes, but we would like to know if a not yet well known project with an ambitious (and more expensive) application is less likely to be selected than the same project with a cheaper and less ambitious proposal.
  • Does applying as individuals reduce our chances to be selected? is it better to apply as an academic institution?
  • Should the endorsers be FLOSS developers? Could they be well known people within the project wider community?
  • if we obtain several endorsers, could we include them all or should we chose only one?

Thank you very much for your help,

Antonio Tenorio-Fornés

Hello again MOSS List,

Following, I paste an extract from the answer to this questions from Pascal Finette, one of the MOSS mentors:

I am traveling at the moment, excuse the brevity of my answers:

(1) It doesn't really matter who (as in "which person") applies. You should have the person apply who represents the project best.

(2) You should ask for the amount of money you need – it has nothing to do with being more or less well known; make sure you have a solid case for your budget.

(3) There is little difference between individuals and/or academic institutions. You need to demonstrate that the project is solid and supported – that might be through a group of individuals as well as through an institution.

(4) It surely doesn't hurt to have well known folks in the FLOSS community support your project.

(5) If you have multiple endorsements, I would list them all.

I hope it is useful for other people in the list.

Cheers,

Antonio

The identity of the applicant is not a factor, except that they need to
be part of the project leadership.

The less money you ask for, the greater your chances of acceptance, but
you will be refused if you obviously ask for too little to achieve what
you want to do. So work out what you want to do, work out how much it
will cost and why, and apply for that (explaining your reasoning).

If the amount is large and the individuals do not have an open source
community reputation, applying via the institution might be better.

They need to be people whose endorsement is worth having. :-)

We would prefer the form was filled out with the Endorser being the
person whose opinion you think carries most weight; if you want to note
other endorsements in some of the other free text fields, feel free.

Note that midnight tonight (30th November) is the application deadline
for the next quarterly round; failing to hit that deadline will result
in a significant delay in the consideration of your application.

That goes for anyone else applying too :-)

Hi Gervasse,

Your answer was useful to our application as well :) When Mozilla intends to release the results?

Best regards,
Ana

Are you asking when applicants will find out if they have been accepted?
The answer is that each applicant will be informed individually after a
decision is made (or if more time is needed). This may be a month or
more away, if the committee is not able to assess all applications in a
single meeting.
