Hello mdners :)
The Developer Engagement team is currently working on planning what we will
do in 2015.
As MDN is part of that team, we wish to have your input and feedback
regarding the planification.
Read through Stormy's e-mail below and feel free to join us in the
planification process and discussions :)
The time frame to answer is quite short so do not wait to much if you want
to get involved with that important part of MDN's life. If there are some
specific topics you want to discuss, feel free to open a dedicated thread
on the Developer Engagement mailing list (
engagement...@lists.mozilla.org). This is really important to be
able to centralized all the feedbacks.
As you know, MDN could not be what it is without you. We deeply value your
input on how to organize things, so don't be shy and tell us what you think
about next year goals and strategies. Now is the time to raise your voice :)
Best,

Subject: [Engagement Developers] 2015 Planning
To: engagement-developers Engagement <
engagement...@lists.mozilla.org>
Hi Developer Engagement folks,
2015 Planning Underway
Mozilla’s 2015 planning process is underway and I wanted to make sure you
know about it and know that you are welcome to join us if you’d like! I’d
also like to call out that the way we set goals for this group will be a
bit different than in 2015 as both Mozilla’s process and internal
organization have changed. In this note I’m going to focus specifically on
DevRel/MDN updates and team goals.
As reference, our 2014 goals are at
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Engagement/Developer_Engagement#DevRel_2014_Goals
. However, we are seeing the current process as an opportunity to identify
both what has and has not worked well to engage more developers in making
the web accessible to everyone, and researching what other strategies we
would be excited about to make the most impact in growing our developer
relationships.
Org updates
The evangelists are now part of the CTO’s office. They will work out their
goals with that group. The MDN webdevs have joined Mozilla’s Cloud Services
team. They’ll continue working on MDN, and with them we are exploring
opportunities to expand into services that make sense for MDN developers.
The rest of us (including the writers) have moved back into engagement.
It’s the goals for that team are what we’re discussing in this thread.
2015 and MDN
The 2015 planning process is a process where many things are happening in
parallel. While the high-level vision and goals for Mozilla as an
organization are being crafted, in parallel all of the product teams and
the supporting teams are creating their goals in an iterative fashion to
ensure things all work together.
The DevRel/MDN team will most likely seek to align our work to the
higher-level objective of growing the “number of our relationships with
developers.” Now we are defining the vision, strategies and tactics that
would support this best in 2015.
Ali Spivak, Diane Tate, Justin Crawford and myself made a rough draft of
what we think our vision looks like. We did not spend a lot of time
wordsmithing this but sought instead to paint a broad narrative of what our
longer-term vision should be, and we welcome your input:
In 3 years … development is synonymous with web development. When someone
learns to code, they start with web technologies. Native platforms embrace
web technologies. People I respect are talking about new web features.
Developers create one experience that runs on all platforms.
We are now, with many of you, defining the strategies that might support
both Mozilla’s mission and our vision of connecting with more developers
more deeply.
The strategies we are exploring (listed here with owners in case you want
to reach out and join the thinking process) include:
-
Developer Presentation Content (Topic in a Box) - Ali
-
Interactive Code Samples & Demos - Ali
-
Compatability Monitoring as a Service - Luke
-
Web Developer Conference - Diane
-
Campaign for mobile web - Justin/Stormy
-
Growing MDN Readership - Ali
If you are interested in working with them, the time to reach out is now!
Here’s the plan:
1.
Oct 9 - We reviewed drafts of the strategies today.
2.
Oct 13 - Aligning strategies and KPIs.
3.
Oct 14 - Selecting which strategies, goals & KPIs to propose to the
steering committee
4.
Oct 14-21st - Iterating, getting feedback, filling out template
5.
Oct 17th or 20th - Dry run with the team
6.
Oct 21st - Presentation to the steering committee
7.
After Oct 21st - Incorporate feedback, continue to iterate & participate
in resource planning
I look forward to working with all of you!
Stormy
