Update: MDN Services - Web Compat 2nd Survey Report

dev-webdev, mdn-drivers, cloudservices-dev,

:hoosteeno and I drafted and sent a 2nd follow-up survey to our first
survey [1] respondents who said "No, but I need to" use a service to
test across browsers.

We're starting to get data back:

The findings that most interested me:

+ >50% of respondents are professionally employed as devs, suggesting
their employers could likely pay for services?

+ CSS is the #1 problematic language, which we're learning may also be
the easier language to parse & analyze (than JavaScript at least). We're
already discussing the most troublesome parts of CSS from a browser
compatibility perspective. [2]

+ 90% of respondents say testing across browsers is moderate-to-very-hard.

+ 44% and 42% of respondents say they don't use an existing service
because they don't have time to learn them and they don't fit into their
workflow (respectively) - so we have a clear indication of how we can
differentiate from existing services. I.e., deliver the service in a way
that fits into existing workflows ...

+ 80% of respondents use code editors that support plugins; 70% use
developer plugins in their browser, so those are the most likely
interaction points to deliver the service

At the end of this survey, we also asked respondents if we could have
direct conversations with them. So we plan to learn a lot more.

We're also drafting similar surveys for an Accessibility service [3] and
a Security service[4], so we'll keep everyone updated with those too.
