Hello everyone,

We had a discussion today, during the Engagement call, about the Join
Mozilla page design
and how to make it more friendly and welcoming :).
Thought I agree about the color ( not all the people really like red :)
), I have some arguments
against integrating Firefox branding into this page:

* when the program was launched, was very clear from the beginning that is
not a fan club or
intended to give people the wrong impression that they pay for Firefox;
* this is meant to be an user engagement program (for the people who already
use Firefox) but
also a general public engagement for a common cause: protect the web and
keep it open.
* as far as I know the money goes back to community (eg. programs, grants
etc.) so would be much
more useful to make visible this rather than thinking on how to integrate
new designs and brandings.

I understand that this program wants to engage users (including people
that not necessarly
understand all about technology) in a funny way. But for that there are
other things the community
could do, as for example: remix videos, do comics, memes, etc. to show how
awesome is the web :).

To conclude, I think that that page should be as simpler as possible. And
now, the focus should be
more on action, events and opening the community. At least, this is how I
would see the things moving.

Hi Alina

thanks so much for starting this post and for your feedback, and I know
what you're getting at. The problem is that we are in this interim
period, where hardly any people who use Firefox know about Mozilla and
our cause. We first have to walk before we can run... or even crawl a
bit! :))

By including the Firefox logo we are giving a visual reference for
people to feel like its a brand they know and something they are proud
to use and support. As more people join, and the cause grows we of
course want to unfold more of Mozilla and the other cools things that
are happening. However to begin with, we need to explain more about the
cause behind Mozilla and the best way to do that is to include the
Firefox brand that they love and respect. Not forgetting, Firefox is
integral to our cause. :)

I just asked a few folks for a few examples of parents brands that we
might not know makes products we love (well, kind of!) -- here's a few:

- Austin Martin is made by Ford
- Taco Bell is owned by Coke
- Oreos are made by Nabisco

I personally had no idea about those parent companies! It gave me a
taste of how I'd feel if I left the Oreo site to visit Nabisco! Just an
example to explain having a few visual clues and details will help
tremendously. :)

In terms of content for the program, we have to remember this again is a
consumer mainstream audience, who have different desires and needs to
us. They want consumer education advice, they want the cool stories
behind Mozilla and Firefox. Its not a fan club, however, the content
must be fun and compelling for that group. Offering more details on
joining events etc will come later, but for the meantime - having them
receive information and be part of a community is a great start.

Lastly, couldn't agree more on the site and this structure isn't
changing any time soon. Only the backdrop design away from red to more
of the blue hues with a Firefox logo.

Would love to hear other people's thoughts and opinions.

Jane
