We have our new secnews server up an running for testing only, no
posting yet.

The address is:

nscp-nntp-ld01.websys.aol.com

Use port 119

Once it is tested for access then we'll change the name back to
secnews.netscape.com

Let me know how it goes ..

Thanks, Jay

They have some interesting ports open other than 119. One of which
(1024) may be used by Latinus. I'm probably out in left field, but it
wouldn't hurt to mention it to someone who knows the server.

There is no posting allowed yet, just up for testing the connection.
Can you at least "connect"?

That's excellent, same here and what should be seen. Once we get past
the test stage, we'll add secnews back to the DNS and we're good to go.

Thanks

At that point will we still have to turn on 40 bit encryption to use
port 563? Or will we be able to plug that security hole by turning that
off.

That's one less server running Collabra. I wonder how many are left
using it for news now.

Ok, I'll be the one that asks the question!!

Jay, you said that this new server will, eventually, switch its name to
secnews.netscape.com and be on port 119. Will we have to wipe our old
secnews profile and re-subscribe, or will we just change the port number
on our current profile??

Devastating news ....

AOL was under the mistaken impression that we wanted to retain secnews
as an archive, not to be posted to. Posting will not be allowed
according to them. In turn, I told them they may as well unplug it as
an archive it is completely useless. No idea where we go with this
from here. I registered my complaint, we'll go from there I guess as I
can't force them to do ANYthing .... bah!!!!!

Nice knowing all the folks on secnews.
You don't suppose someone from Mozilla got to them?

Well I guess we will all be welcome over at annexcafe Jay if you want to
sign up with Annexcafe its a authenticated server. We can do mostly what
we could on secnews. have be careful about copyrighted material though.
the group is *annexcafe.phoenix.netscape.imaging* server is
*news.annexcafe.com*

I have no idea why folks are unwilling to use annexcafe (maybe it's the fact that you can't really be anonymous)
As far as copyright material, linking is OK, you just can't have copywrite material "stored" on the server.

My condolences to anyone who was using it and wanted it to continue. I
hope there is a good place for folks to reconvene, whether it's
annexcafe or some other server.

It sounds as if you suspect someone from Mozilla of intimidating AOL in
order to get posting disabled on AOL's Netscape server. If you meant
something completely different that that, ok, but if you meant anything
even in the same ballpark as that, it's insane.

Thanks for the condolences. There was never a hint during all this that
secnews was reverting to an archive server which is completely useless.
Why AOL would even devote the time and a few $$ to make it such is
beyond me. I was told that "they" don't have the resources OR the time
to police the server. Funny that they PAY me to admin their 50+
Compuserve forums. I "hinted" that they could "throw in" secnews duties,

Since Mozilla has a hatred of such activities on there servers, who to
say. Maybe Mozilla is leading the Charge to get all such activity banned
from internet period. Who knows. I'm not saying it is. But anything is
possible. we were doing fine here with the equivalent groups then
certain people started mucking around and basically hamstrung the group
till the point it was useless, and died. I betting the parties involved
were laughing their heads off when it died.

what some people don't realize, is that such activities help people to
learn how to create web pages. If not for my participation in NNTM and
MMTM I would not have created first website for my Electronics
Association and Created my own website.

http://www.phillipmjones.net.

Now to people that Hundreds of thousands of Dollars a week for website
design might laugh their backsides off at it, but except for two pages
(which have music that can be played or not (uses a console) and one
very small Flash slide show ( it doesn't crash any browsers because it
so small) its 100% w3c standards compatible.

Its seems Mozilla goal at least in the newsgroups is to stifle any
creativity what so ever.
