Not interested in the iPhone 8 (or the 7S, for that matter). I am 6

Allen had a valve replacement, which caused his afib. They used
amiodarone for a while, and then did an ablation, which cured it. They

"They" is NOT the proper pronoun. Better: "Approaching the fearful
precipice, one wonders what waits..." I wish somebody would come up
with a proper 'him/her' substitute. Until then we have to work around
the need for it.

And there's no need for 'their' before dormition either. Nice word.
Did you make it up? If so, you spelled it correctly!

"They" as a the generic, non-specific personal pronoun has been around
for centuries.

Also, I just noticed that I hadn't spoke to the use of using "their"
there. Since I noticed that was was specifically used in reference to
the Virgin Mary's ascension to heaven, I felt I needed to include this
wee bit of blasphemy to separate mere mortals also getting there using
the anti-grav route.

When speaking non-specifically, confusion is pretty much assured, but
hardly a problem, if one is careful about the rest of the sentence.

A common reaction. ;-)

Do you never use "They say that..." to mean "Many/most people say that..."?

Anyhow, if you were right, it would have disappeared long ago. Language
changes, that is, people stop using words/phrases/grammatical
structures/etc that no longer meet some need, and adopt/adapt/invent new
ones.

BTW, I find pronouns without clear antecedents much more confusing than
the generic "they", which in my experience is almost never confusing.
There's one in my previous sentence, but the context of this post
supplies the necessary antecedent, so most readers will have no trouble
knowing what I intend.

We need a new pronoun to match the French "on", which covers the singular case
which was under discussion and the general plural as in "they say that ..."

I just heard something which added the reflexive, which made it even
sillier. "They rode the bicycle themselves." At the very least, the
person could have used 'themself' :-(

> We need a new pronoun to match the French "on", which covers the singular case

Indeed. It's my understanding that 'on' has replaced 'nous' in a number
of cases. 'One' in English just sounds too pompous for general usage
and applies to a general concept rather than a specific activity anyway.

Isn't the French 'on dit' an equivalent to the English 'people (tend to)
say'?

Because he disappeared suddenly. He was a frequent and valued

They probably don't even know they exist :-( Some friends/associates
have notified newsgroups, but we have no idea how common or rare that is.

+many!

How many of us have survivors who even know what usenet is, much less
find the groups we subscribe to and then post a message? It's happened,
but not often. No more than half a dozen times in 2 decades, but a lot
of people have just disappeared.

Better chance with facebook -- don't most people have a mix of
relatives, RL friends, net friends and total strangers, at least ONE of
which would probably post that We are no longer among the living?

Feh.

The military uses 11 Jun 2017. I got hooked on 20170611-074321 as a way
of naming photos. 11/6/17 is genuinely ambiguous and I would apologize
if the apology actually meant anything.

Still, we all miss Jay no matter what calendar system we use.

Hmm! Now that you mention 'Military', I think 'We' used 11/06/2017, i.e.
numbers rather than words!

On the other hand, we used a 24hr clock, 00:01 till 23:59, and, as I was
in the Army Communication game, more often than not we were using Zulu
time zone times, i.e. GMT!!

You have your Seamonkey set to English (US) and you blame "Yanks"?
English (UK) is also available and the date-format is one of the
differences.
I think the date-and-time handling changed between 2.49.x and 2.53.x,
Preferences -> Appearance, Date and Time Formatting. One of the sites I
visit uses some JavaScript function to output the date/time and the
formats changed from "dd mm yyyy" 24-hour hh:mm to "mm dd yyyy" hh:mm
am/pm when I installed the newer level. I had to change the
locale-settings at the OS-level to fix that.

The reminder application I use (System Scheduler 5.30) _does_ look at my
locale-settings - but only looks to see if I have d before m. I actually
have yyyy-m-d, but SS gives me its dates in mm/dd/yyyy format )-:. [They
obviously only know the two formats, not ISO.)
