Comments:
I've been a mostly happy firefox user for nearly two years now. I say
mostly happy because I had to learn to always have windows task manager
open to make sure that an exited firefox was actually exited.
Lately however firefox takes a long time to load- sometimes a really,
really long time. There has also developed a problem with
hanging/freezing, which can be quite frequent and long in duration.
The Yahoo! homepage has been an unreadable, unusable mess for a while
now but that was not such a big issue as long as the Yahoo! toolbar was
usable. Unfortunately the Yahoo! toolbar can no longer be managed under
firefox and that was pretty much the last thing that kept me from trying
chrome.
I just downloaded chrome tonight- it loads very fast indeed. I can't
use the Yahoo! toolbar but the homepage loads up just fine and I can use
bookmarks from there- a bit awkward and clumsy but it works.
I much prefer the look and feel of firefox but unworkable is unworkable.

You must close Firefox properly with File -> Exit
Plug-in and tasks started by Firefox may continue after attempting
to close Firefox. The "X" in the upper right-hand corner closes the
Window (same as Ctrl+Shift+W) but even if it is the last Firefox window,
it does not necessarily close Firefox .
The only proper way to exit Firefox is to use Exit through the
File menu, not the "X" in the upper right corner of last Firefox window.
"QuickRestart" extension (34 KB download)
use to close and restart Firefox after enabling or disabling an extension, switching
to a new theme, or modifying configuration files, then you don't have to worry
about delay or have to look in the Task Manager to see if Firefox is closed yet.
Adds "Ctrl+Alt+R" keyboard shortcut

For your other problem:
I'd get rid of the Yahoo Toolbar, and figure out or explain what you wanted
from it. The search engines can include Yahoo and you can create a
search engine if not there by default, and/or you can create a keyword search
see "Problematic Extensions"

Creating search engine or a search keyword shortcut are mentioned here...
