I am certain that you fine folks are WAY underthanked- so here's one
for 3.5.5! I am no coder-(not modern anyway, since I stopped teaching
BASIC and ALGOL 60 and FORTRAN in 1971- 2 years after I write my first
line of code- in 1968!) - but I've been on the net since BEFORE the
Web, when you had to know UNIX to use it, and All Was Text. I remember
seeing the first Mosaic - I'm now an Internet-specialist lawyer, and I
advised the FIRST commercial ISPs in Houston and Austin (io.com) and
drafted (for free) the still-in-use MAE Agreement for Houston when they
began to sprout - so our packets wouldn't HAVE to go to Calif. or NYC
to get across town.
I knew that The Best Browser EVER had a 3.5.4 release that was- not
what it should be. My symptoms were: ALL my RAM being eaten and only
released if I killed FF(I only have 3/4 gig of RAM-my bad) and
consequent hopeless task-choking and command-stacking from my own
impatience; finding TWO instantiations of FF running, which I am
normally very good at sensing and killing fast in M$ Task Mugger; and
just general slowness and stupid crashes on simple sites SO BAD I
almost might have been running IE (shudder!)- notice I said ALMOST!
I consider FF (and really all mozilla stuff) a MAGNIFICENT Gift
from you Code-Gods: you SAVED us ALL from TOTAL Net Ruination and
being FORCED to be a WIDE-OPEN Virus Magnet, and I've been a
Spreadfirefox zealot since FF1.0.
YOU all accomplished the UNBELIEVABLE- you SMASHED THE EVIL EMPIRE'S
ILLEGAL attempt to monopolize the browser mkt., and I firmly believe
that w/o FF after good ol' NutScrape got abandoned, ALL non-Unix WimpOS
users today would have browsers that work for M$, not THEM! And the
Evil Empire's Plan would have worked! Gates-scum (who didn't even KNOW
about the Net until his father-in-law told him in 1993) would have had
the way clear to FORCE HIS crappy browser on ALL the PC market, and
change to HIS proprietary will all our fine common HTML standards from
Tim Berners-Lee, (thus smashing Apple), FORCE ALL Webmasters and
Browsers not hip to 'nix (and that's what my next OS WILL be!) to use
HIS bloated Virus- magnet IE browser - and the Web would be a VERY
different place indeed!
A BAAD M$-place, not with the Common-Effort Open-Source Spirit with
which it was built and designed - (and which tradition YOU carry on
beautifully), so our Web-apps can be free from the Gates-Tax, but a
jungle of crap-M$ ruined-HTML stds., with M$ proprietary standards
Market-Monopoly FORCED on ALL sites and browsers.
So as far as I'm concerned (and I'm EFF Member No. 632) YOU picked up
the Netscape baton and kept us FREE from a Blue Web of Death! Did you
know that Gates obviously developed (read COPIED) early IE from NCSA
Mosaic, but HATED so much to pay even its light licensing fee -
comparable to a Creative Commons license that forces for-profit
code-copiers (that's him!) to cough up!, but still is just short of
being open-source freeware, that he DELIBERATELY coded later IE in such
a way that his phalanxes of shysters (ahem!) could correctly assert
that later IE vers. had NOT A SINGLE LINE of the original Mosaic Daddy-
of-All-Good-Browsers code?

So as far as I'm concerned, after Netscape went under (and it was
being commercialized and taken Non-Open Source too fast as well by
Andreesen, whom Gates successfully CRUSHED by illegally interweaving
his Internet Exploiter browser into the WimpOS) YOU SAVED THE WEB! YOU
kept our "common-effort for the good of all" philosophy going during
the HARD days.. when it could have been ANYBODY'S Web - and don't think
for a MINUTE ALL Gates' Web plans didn't involve monopolizing it too!
Just as he illegally monopolized the OS market for Ordinary Joe and Jane
User!
I was TERRIFIED he'd win the Browser Wars and STEAL our Web (built by
MUCH kinder, BETTER people than THAT pig will ever be!) and his only
punishment under our anti-monopoly laws being a token fine equal to
one hour's M$ profits..
So you may not all realize it, but YOU saved the Common-in-
EVERYBODY'S BEST-INTEREST HTML-Standards Web in its cradle from the
Evil Empire, YOU saved the PC World from M$ Domination not only of the
average user's OS, but also ALL WEB BROWSERS AND ALL WEB COMMON
STANDARDS from the Evil One, - and you were the FIRST to show that
Open Source was BEST for all (we wouldn't even HAVE a Web without Tim
Bernars-Lee and his "take my work FREE for EVERYBODY's benefit"
ideals)- and that OPEN SOURCE IDEALS COULD radically cut the M$ 90%
Mkt-share (which IS a hateful monopoly- he just bought the Justice
Dept. off and buddied-up to the Evil Rethuglican Greed Sock-Puppets
that they palmed off on us as real-life Presidents). Notice how when
just-an-Actor Reagan got Alzheimer's really bad, NO ONE NOTICED?
To sum up- YOU CHANGED THE WORKLD BY KEEPING GATES FROM TAKING OVER
THE WEB, YOU first showed us that great open-source free browsers
COULD and WOULD drive out OBVIOUSLY inferior proprietary products -
even in a monopolized PC OS market! YOU saved Apple as an alternative
OS & browser I LOVE how you write + support FFox for Macs and ALL the
yummy open-'Nix flavors! Jobs should send you a solid-gold Mac!
And YOU rocked the virtual WebWorld with the power of GOOD OPEN-SOURCE
FOR ALL VS. EVIL PROPRIETARY NO-CHOICE MONOPOLIES! YOU took on the
Redmond DeathStar and WON! Not even billions of bux, legions of coder-
slaves, and the most Unethical and just-plain-illegal business
practices EVER SEEN IN HISTORY COULD be SMASHED to DUST by a Few Good
People!
Plus, the little item that FFox was a HUGELY better browser made by
MUCH better coders was NOT unnoticed! Seen (shudder)IE8 lately? Oh
yeah! Now WHO'S COPYING WHOM? IE 8 is now just a forcibly-separated
from-the-OS browser (like a good app should always be, just so
Web-malware can't hook your kernel so easily) with .. guess what?
Tabbed browsing... integrated search.. a big plugins and Extensions
library (but they're ALL MUCH worse than YOURS, and LOCK you into
SOMEBODY'S proprietary stuff, like Adopey!)- trying VAINLY to be faster
and slimmer, (which they will NEVER EVER be)- and obviously again, just
a REALLY Bloated, crap-filled wannabe-copy trailing FAR behind FFox's
snappy little World-Embracing tail!
I confess- I can very accurately judge any Netuser's level of
sophistication by whether they browser-default to IE or not! And I'm
always RIGHT! IE = FFox for DUMMIES!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU - AND PLEASE MULTIPLY THOSE BY ALL THE
BILLIONS OF USERS YOU HAVE - including Mighty Mozilla, BIG Bad T-Bird,
and ALL your wonderful freewares!
I know you're distributed all over the globe and probably HAVE no
Main Hall Bulletin Board to post this on- but it would please me
mightily if it was posted where ALL the FFox/'Zilla Developers and Team
could see it... and you, you Quiet Hero reading this now- just MIGHT
wanna think about passing this on to them ALL by email!
Just a thought-you're busy people, but I don't think it can hurt to let
you folks KNOW that you are ALL HEROES OF THE WEB! So now - IMAGINE ALL
your USERS ROARING and CHEERING you on in a billion-person Stadium!
Whoa! That's LOUD! AND YOU EARNED IT!
