Greetings,

This is Project Candle bug triage email. The process used is described at
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Performance/Project_Candle#Bug_triage_process.

At the time of writing there are 44 unprioritized Power bugs, viewable at
http://mzl.la/1JjDIMy. In this thread I am discussing 10 of the more recent
ones.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=984506
* High power consumption on Sohu

Measuring on Mac, Firefox is much worse than both Safari and Chrome.

I suggest P2, though I have no sense of how popular a site Sohu is.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=987212
* Invisible gif (visibility: hidden) activates the refresh driver

Has patches from Mats, but he doesn't have time to work on it any more :(

I suggest P2.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=994566
* Feature Request: Automatically Turn off WiFi-Scan after X Minutes without
success

Seems like a reasonable idea.

I suggest P2.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=994846
* [QRD] Device is sluggish, CPU use is constantly high, logcat is non-functional

"QRD" is apparently "Qualcomm reference design".

I suggest P3, because it seems (see comment 5) that this is a device not widely
available(?)

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1003912
* [B2G][Browser]Websites that load slowly drains device battery at alarming rate
at nydailynews.com

Would be good to confirm if this still happens. Maybe be related to some of our
existing bugs about animations.

I suggest P2.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1010638
* [MADAI][Multimedia] During video playback, power consumption was higher than
android.

Long bug. Stuff about layers; unclear outcome.

I suggest P2, just because it's the default and I have no idea about this one.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1013373
* [ZTE Open C v1.2] - If an app is left open data and battery are used up

And old B2G bug. I asked in the bug if it's still relevant.

I suggest P2 if it is still relevant.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1026669
* Battery performance Droid X Firefox for Android or site compatibility

I don't have much to say about this. Perhaps mfinkle or rnewman could make a
suggestion for a priority?

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1029993
* [Peak][v1.4][Battery]Is the energy compulsion increased in 1.4?

A vague and out-of-date B2G bug.

I suggest closing it.

* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1036206
* calling the Ring command causes the device's CPU to jump 10-15% with an
increase in threads

Strange bug... it's not unreasonable that if you do something that power
consumption would go up briefly.

I suggest closing or making P3.

IIRC QRD devices are not available anymore, I returned mine months ago
and I think they were sent back to the vendor, I suggest closing this bug.

That's one type of bug we already saw multiple times on FxOS and it
boils down to something preventing the hardware compositor from working
- usually a spurious layer caused by a statusbur icon or the software
home button. In this specific case I guess it was the software home
button (see comment 64 and 65). Comment 90 seems to suggest that the
problem was fixed - which I believe it was - but I can't be sure. It
would be worth checking on the Z3C which also uses the software home
button and see if the problem went away or not, I'll leave a comment on
the bug.

e-mail app bug, this was solved long ago, I suggest closing (I could
verify it myself as I use the e-mail app every day on my primary phone).

Vague and indeed about a very old version of FxOS. I'm for closing it too.

Unfortunately hardware layers is turned off entirely on the Z3C due to
bugs. However, on newer devices the power cost of this might be smaller,
so you could still measure it.

According to Alexa ( http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/sohu.com ) it has a 42 global rank, and 8 in China.

Since it looks like the CPU usage is the main issue, I guess the next step here is to run a profiler.

The rest of this all looks fine to me.

I believe it should be enabled now at least on roll-your-own builds, see
Alexandre's comment on the bug.

FYI: I would normally apply the bug prioritizations today but it's a
public holiday here so I will do it on Monday.

Xidorn and mccr8 pointed out that it's #42 in the world and #8 in
China, so I upped this to P1.

I closed it on gvelto's recommendation.

Doesn't seem to be a problem any more, and it got resolved as
WORKSFORME during the week.

I did P2 because I got no response and that's the default.
