Does anyone else out there read the news on CNN.com using Firefox
(2.0.0.9)?

In the middle column at the top of the main page ( http://www.cnn.com
) is a listing of "Latest News". Anywhere from 10-20% of these stories
have a video camera icon at the end of the headline which signifies
that the story is a video clip. If I click on one of these stories, I
get the following error:

The web browser you are using to view this video is not supported.
Please use one of the supported browsers:

I am running eCS 2.0 RC2 with the SNAP full product video drivers and
the flash plugin patched to: Shockwave Flash 9.0 r47.

Is there any way I can view these video clips using Firefox under eCS?
I have not yet tried Seamonkey.

Thanks!

I suggest using the Feedback link, and find out what format the clips
are actually in. They are, obviously, not FLASH, but there is no
indication of what they really are. If you can find that out, it is
possible that something in the OS/2 world can play them.

Hope this helps...

On Linux I get
"The video timed out attempting to play.
Please ensure that you do not have any Flash Blocking plugins active."
so it really seems to be Flash. Just that they are trying to do
something clever before showing the video (and of course this is really
very stupid!).

They have their own plugin based on flash, I think.

PLUGIN ERROR:
Oops! You need the latest version of the Turner Media Plugin to view

Please restart your browser after the plugin is installed.

Wonder if something like mediaplayerconnectivity (there are a few
different extensions to download flash on firefox) would allow them to
stream to mplay, ffmpeg, kmp or warpvision all of which should/may play
these.

I have tried contacting cnn previously several times and have never had
a response; I guess you could get lucky though...

The source for the page that is supposed to be showing a clip of the bad
weather in NE USA
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/weather/12/03/winter.weather.ap/index.html#cnnSTCVideo
contains the following code:-

if (typeof(CNN_FlashDetect) != "undefined") {
s.prop18 = parseInt(CNN_FlashDetect.prototype.getVersion());}

Looks like Flash is required to me.

Regards

Pete

I think there is not difference between those items and the ones in
the Headlines list that are marked with a small camera icon. The ones
that have the symbol in the middle of the frame are those that are
accompanied by a text story. They are all plain just Flash. But of
course CNN has to make them the very latest release of Flash (for no
good reason at all).
