Buying prescription drugs from purported Canadian web pharmacies can be risky business, according to a July Food and Drug Administration (FDA) test. In addition to zolpidem, the FDA purchased sildenafil citrate (Viagra) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). None of the three has a FDA-approved generic version, making all three unapproved for U.S. sale. The zolpidem purchase contained individual doses with too much of the active ingredient, including one pill that was nearly twice as potent as labeled. This defect puts patients, especially the elderly or disabled, at risk for CNS depression. Both the sildenafil citrate and atorvastatin contained too little active ingredient and failed FDA purity tests, and both were provided even though the FDA “patient” was taking a contraindicated antibiotic.
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has established a program that certifies web sites that meet industry standards, and the FDA recommends looking for this or a similar certification before buying drugs.
