Why is it necessary to provide my age when registering for an account at
addons.mozilla.org? This seems an intrusion that has no relevance to my
use of the account.

I'm not sure why that is. This list is for discussion of the development of www.mozilla.org. There is a separate list for addons.mozilla.org[1]. Hopefully they would be able to answer your question.
