Hey everyone,

We would like to provide some additional resources to augment testing
of translations in many locales.

We intend to contract an external company that has a set of known good
testers, in particular, they have native language skills as well as
skills in testing, i.e., following test plans, creating test plans,
writing reports, being technical about their review etc. This company
would act like someone with fresh eyes to have an extensive and
thorough run through of your localized Firefox builds, and to come
back with reviews. They could directly file bugs on your localization
component. These should be considered bugs as any other bug filed by a
new addition to the Firefox testing community or a Firefox user in
your locale; appreciate the feedback, look at the comment and
suggestions, make up your mind on whether you like it or not and act
appropriately.

Last year, for Firefox 2, we identified www.smartware.com as a
provider of these services, after quite a bit of research. We might
also solicit other vendors that provide similar services if you have
ideas. Smartware produced the following reports for Firefox 2 (which
Tim Riley then converted to bugs):
http://people.mozilla.com/~timr/FF2.0/L10n/

This year, before we deploy SmartWare more fully we would appreciate
getting some feedback especially from those locales that received bugs
or reports from SmartWare last year. We have asked Smartware to take
an early look at Polish, German and French now, to get some current
data on their output and value back to you.

If you have feedback on Smartware specifically and/or other potential
ways to use this funding for the same goals i.e., improve translation
quality and testing support. Please give us your thoughts.

Thanks

Hello Mic

I'm responsible for a few translation projects for Portuguese from
Portugal, and i recently started helping the Portuguese group to
translate firefox 3, i've seen this report sent by SmartWare, on my
language there's 8 reported bugs, looking at the translations that
where made, and the translations suggested by SmartWare i must say i
tottally disagree, the correct translation for them doesn't apply, it
looks like they ran that on a web translation site.
So i must say i didn't like their work at all.
That's just my opinion.

Best regards all

I've been reviewing SmartWare for Spanish localization (I have to say
that we didn't receive any bugs at es-ES component related to
SmartWare report). My opinion differs from Bruno's; some of the
reports from SmartWare for Spanish have a point, and I'm going to
discuss them in our internal mailing list.

OTOH, most of the reports come actually from a lack of knowledge about
Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Localization Process. For instance, they
complain about Bookmark Toolbar Folder not being translated in
spanish, but this happened to them only because they didn't create new
profiles for each execution. They also complain about DOM Inspector
and Talkback descriptions not being localized, but actually we can't
localize Talkback and DOM Inspector follows a not very well documented
process.

So, I hope they are not too expensive. :-)

Hi,
I'm re-posting the initial post from Mic as I didn't get it in my newsgroup reader Thunderbird, and it may be the case for other people :

Hi,

The Frenchmozilla team didn't receive this "report" at the time.
I will try to stay polite in my statements :
Concerning the mere localization testing and the suggestions they made
for French : it's *crap*. The suggestions were not even French, were
hardly understandable and were obviously the result of a bad automated
translating process.
I think that the MoCo has been fooled with this, and please, don't loose
money again with these charlatans!

Looking at http://people.mozilla.com/~timr/FF2.0/L10n/da/

They got one point right: point number 6.

What is interesting is point 3. They complain about "More" in "More
Encodings" (they want to use uncountable more instead of countable
more), but actually the word "Encodings" is wrong (it is translated
"Character set").

Not worth much.

I'll have to second Cédric's opinion on their work.

Case by case for pt-PT:

1) No problem in leaving, could be a minor improvement.

2) Wrong translation. Error in language (non-concordance of gender).

3) Wrong translation of current meaning (even the one that would be
close would be wrong). Typo in the suggested translation.

4) See 2)

5) See 2)

6) Makes understanding harder.

7) Wrong translation.

8) No idea. Is this even a L10n issue?

Conclusion: if this kind of work became bug reports, I'd probably just
get the habit of using WONTFIX as a resolution.

We already check for consistency, spell checking, respect for a glossary
we've build and several others. We weren't able to fix all issues for
2.0, so you can see some of the things we've detected in
http://server.intraneia.com/~mozilla/ff/2.0/rel/

This kind of work (by smatware) is not needed for us and would result in
spending time in the wrong things (trying to triage bugs instead of
correcting real bugs).

João Miguel Neves
