[firefox] Activity Stream (New Tab) project available for localization

Hi everyone,
I've just enabled a new project in Pontoon: Activity Stream (New Tab).

This is currently shipping as a Test Pilot experiment, but it will soon
(April) ship as part of Firefox itself, replacing the current about:home
and New Tab experience.

As you can imagine it's important to get it localized in as many
languages as possible, and start testing soon. That's why it's already
enabled for all Firefox locales in Pontoon: if you localize Firefox, you
need to translate this project too.

Strings are not stored in mozilla-central to allow faster iterations:
while that's good for developers, it's also good for localization,
because it means we can ship updates and fixes faster.

It's a very small project at the moment: 29 strings, and most of them
are already translated in Mozilla software, so you can take full
advantage of the Machinery tab and Pontoon's translation memory. We
expect string changes in the upcoming weeks, but the size of the project
shouldn't change drastically.

A new version of the experiment is shipping next week. I'm confirming
with the developers what's the expected development cycle for the next

Correction: the next public release will happen on February 20, so
there's more time than anticipated.

You can install a dev build of the add-on from
https://moz-activity-streams-dev.s3.amazonaws.com/dist/latest.html

The plan is to sync the localization repository daily, so you should be
able to test your localization (or updates) within 24 hours from the
commit in Pontoon.

Hi San James,
There's no plan to enable it on Pootle. Note that there are other
projects that are available only on Pontoon, so it's important that
each team has at least one person available to commit translations
(translator), or manage other contributors (locale manager).

If that's not the case for any locale, please get in touch and we'll fix it.

I manage all the locales in Uganda, as well as the contributors.

However, since our experience has mostly with Pootle which dates back to
Firefox 3 as part of ANLoc sub projects. We have not done much with
Poontoon but if necessary, can delve into it and also bring the rest of our
localizers upto speed.

Hi Francesco.

Thank yo for the announcement. Czech should be ready on Pontoon for testing.

Two questions:
- once activity stream is deployed, is it going to replace the tiles only,
or the new tab completely - in other words, are they going to remove the
gear button with the option to show blank page only?
- in the dev build, instead of strings I see entity names instead of
english strings - does it mean there is no "compile time" fallback, when
the translation is missing?

Good question.

If you install the add-on, you don't have a gear icon, but you can
simply disable the add-on. I assume the possibility to have a blank page
will be always available in Firefox, but that's just me guessing.

Hi,

Good question Michal about more options.
I hope there will be more options, because I don't like the Activity Stream
at all as it is presented right now in Testpilot.

- not enough tiles if you ask me
- buttons for highlights are way to big, waste of space
- scrolling through history seems tedious and unnecessary with awesome
bar

Have been pointing this out in several feedbacks, but all still seems the
same until now.

New tab is a very important component for daily users and needs to be
handled with great care and high ability to customize.
