Hello,

new Pootle has been started now and it looks pretty good. But, I dislike
that the number of critical errors is so conspicuous. In fact, often
there are no critical errors. Most of the so-called critical errors are
just shown as critical errors because the syntax of the translated
strings is compared with this of the English strings. Translators have
to check the translated strings needlessly. Maybe two or three strings
really have errors but most strings have no error. The syntax check is
misleading because it shows errors where no errors are.

Regards,

Michael

Hi Friedel
Is the new Pootle on Locamotion?
Yeah Friedel I dislike that too. It might appear as ignorant arrogance for
English to think if something does not look like, it's probably wrong. I
have usually wasted a lot of time checking those perfect Fulah strings
marked as errors.

Please don't complain about the fact that localizers make mistakes and
us infra guys write tools to find them.

If you find a false positive, open an issue. The current list on
https://github.com/translate/translate/labels/checks doesn't seem to be
exhaustive.

The fact that they're now less easy to overlook is good for you, you
should embrace that change with joy.

I didn't complain, I critized. That's a difference.

That's a joke, isn't it? A false positive! A false positive is here if
translators find a real error! Localizers created a new Pootle, that's
OK, but why did they take over this useless syntax check?

Do you mock translators? The syntax check is useless and they should
embrace the change that errors that are not errors are displayed so
conspicuously. The new Pootle would have been a chance to introduce a
useful syntax check or, if not possible, to give it up.

Which syntax check exactly are we talking?

It's true there are some long term annoyances in there which affect most
locales (plurals as FP, SimplePlurals, use of caps) but most are locale
specific (like use of ' though that's going away with our switch to ’)
and I think it's hard to come up with a system that fits all the target
locales well. I think at some point most of us just grit our teeth and
click the FP away.

Hi all
About:
"...but most are locale specific (like use of ' though that's going away
with our switch to ’) "
Can you elaborate on this?
In Catalan locale the use of ' is very common in contractions. Switching to
’ is suboptimal, since the physical keyboard key is for ', not for ’

Hi Jordi

Yes, it's a touch annoying to input but I usually enter it via ALT 0146
once and then copy-paste. The other option I have used too is to take a
po file and do a replace (not global replace because I don't trust that
in such files) but in apps like Notepad++ you can use keyboard shortcuts
to accept and go to next so it's relatively fast.

The one benefit I have found, apart from avoiding all those FP checks is
that (although that's less of a problem on Mozilla) I don't get as many
bug reports for having to escape " or '.

So overall, I find it takes more time to enter but it saves as much time
overall.

One can also customize her/his keyboard to input ’ instead of '

Hi Michael,

I think I misunderstood your inicial comment (reading too fast):
> "...but most are locale specific (like use of ' though that's going away
> with our switch to ’) "
I misunderstood that by "our switch" you meant "Mozilla", and now I
understand that you're referring to your specific locale.
I thought Mozilla was planning to change ' to ’ globally.
Sorry about that!

New pootle is really cool for translation system. We can track many things
from that. I guess it is now fast than older. Yes ! Security is also there.

Great work!

Not sure how to respond to that, but thanks ;) (Since this UI is actually
older the Transifex)

Goals will be back.

They were ready for the upgrade but we hit a performance bottleneck, so it
was easier to deploy the current setup and bring goals back in a week or
two. So just hang in their a little and we'll get goals back. I think
you'll like them even more than the old goals system.

Hi All,

Some response on checks:

1. The checks are the same as old Pootle, they're just more exposed.
And the only reason they were hidden previously is that they were costly,
we always wanted translators to see them.
2. The only checks exposed on the Browse pages are critical and almost
always should be fixed and almost always are not language specific.
3. The checks on the editor are the same as before. The difference is
that critical checks will block your submission
4. You can Mute a check that does not apply (which you could also do
previously)
5. There are stylistic and functional tests that are likely not relevant
to your language. We can fix and remove those on a language by language
basis but we need to hear which those are and implement that in the code.
These do not block a submission and do not appear on the Browse pages.
They're there to catch silly mistakes such as breaking an acronym, leaving
out quotes, etc. They can be adapted to your language and we do e.g. types
of quotes, but again we need to hear.

Hope that gives some clarity
