Help for localizing Firefox Hello

Hi!
As you know, Mozilla is launching a new service "Hello" that is intended to break down the walls around services like Microsoft Skype and Google Hangouts [1]. Although Hello works currently on Desktop, a FirefoxOS version is coming and for that we need your help for that! One of the first market Loop is going to be launched at is Germany and we need you in order to have the application properly localised to German.

- How can you help us?
The application is available at github [2] and it's currently localised for English and Spanish [3]. We are waiting for incoming Pull Requests to get the app localized app and running in Goethe's language!

- When?
Well, this is really urgent, we need to have the app properly localised by 30th October. We know it's challenging, but I am pretty sure you will help us to make it: your help is essential for a key mozilla product!

- I want/need to more about loop (Firefox Hello is the comercial name) so I can help: at loop wiki [4] you can find more information about how to install and use Loop

I'm in the process of localizing this in Italian and testing the app.

Note for localizers (I'll probably have more at the end of the process).

Hi,

unfortunately, calling with Firefox Hello is stuck at 'Dialing'
(confirmed by another localizer):

Other issues (do you want them reported as bug reports in
bugzilla.mozilla.org or as GitHub issues?):

- Canceling the login screen for Firefox Accounts opens the 'Oops!'
error screen.

- If there is no Wi-Fi or mobile data connection when setting Fx Hello
up, it will complain and go to the initial welcome screen.

- On smaller screens, the localized status strings like 'Dialing' can
become partially hidden behind the icons of the call screen.

- In the call bar at the bottom, the label is "Firefox Hello -Anruf" for
German, so it seems {{serviceName}} has at least a trailing whitespace
(which it shouldn't).

First things first, I forgot to mention that Loop testing has been done exclusively in 2.0 as that is the commercial version to be distributed soon.

Although we recommend you to test Loop with FFOS 2.0, as I've already commented in the bug, it's working for me in Gaia master, Gecko mozilla-central.

Yes, please open any issue you discover in Bugzilla, using FirefoxOS Product and Gaia::Loop component. We'll have a look at the issues you mention below.

The path I proposed for the fxos Hello App is built to give a better
connection between the developers of the app and the community that
helps to build the localized app. It also allows to to scale as we
empower more projects to self-service their needs.

Pootle or in particular mozilla.locamotion.org aren't on the critical
path for this project.

While it's technically possible to expose strings and get them back into
the hello app, I don't see this project to be on the hook to make that
happen.

If there's a community that wants it to happen, I suggest that 2 or 3
people volunteer to do the actual work, i.e., following the loop
project, pick up strings there, expose them on a pootle project, watch
updates there, transform them into PRs, and coordinate the feedback
between the technical pieces and the translation contributors.

Hi Maria,
two suggestions.

1) Please check the queue. Pull requests are piling up, I even see two
for Italian

2) If you want to don't get localizers mad, at this point you should
consider changing IDs when you update strings. Otherwise you'll ship
outdated content in localizations and nobody will notice (a couple of
strings were changed in the last days).

Hi Francesco!

Thanks for the heads-up. About the IDs, you are very right, I have asked our team not to re-use IDs anymore.

About the incoming PRs, I'd like first of all to say a big thank you for all the PRs that are being received. My apologies for the lack of feedback from our side, but we are now focused on the delivery of the first version of the Loop app and did not have time to review the contributions (thanks again!).

In order to be able to localise the app for a given language we need:

A/ The properties files for the Loop strings, e.g. app/locales/loop.en-US.properties for English
B/ The properties files for dates l10n, e.g. app/locales/date/date.en-US.properties for English
C/ Modify Loop manifest file (app/manifest.webapp) to include the language in the locales list, e.g.
"en-US": {
"name": "Firefox Hello",
"description": "Firefox Hello"
},

After you have done all the required changes and *before* creating your commit, please execute the command "make" in your working copy [1] so any commit you create includes also an extra commit to "bump" the version of the application. Based on the contributions received form the German community you can see an example of how to do this at [2].

For those of you not familiar with Git, we have created a more detailed set of instructions on the wiki [3]. I'll be catching-up with the pending PRs to ensure they are in a format that can be merged.
