I just became aware that the awesome manifesto video (which I first saw back
at fosdem) has been made public as part of the brand tookit:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/brand/platform/#video-player

I showed this to my gf (who's German and not as fluent in English as I am),
and she mentioned that on watching it for the first time, she missed several
of the concepts in the video as it used a lot of complex terminology, and
that even when those concepts are reinforced in the video by written text,
it's moving too swiftly for her to really take it in.

I'm not aware of the intended target audience for the video, but either way
I personally find it an extremely powerful message, and believe it should be
accessible to the entire community. Are there any plans to localize it, or
even to start looking at what'd be needed to localize it? (E.g. are the
source files of the video available so that the text in it can also be
localized?)

Hi Sander,

Glad you liked the video, it's one of my favorites as well :)

The video has been in fact made localizable using the Universal
Subtitles platform:

I agree that we should use and expose these translations on the brand
toolkit page. I filed a bug to track this idea:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=691028

Feel free to chime in in the bug with more thoughts. Thanks for
bringing this up!

Take care,
-stas

Ah, good idea! Subtitling is a very good first step (made me go and improve
the existing Dutch subtitles a bit while I was at it).

I was thinking a step further though; since the video consists of mostly
just a voiceover, it should be much more doable than with most videos to
have it dubbed; _spoken_ in different languages (assuming the source files
are available (not just for the text shown in the video, I realized, but
also for retaining the music behind the voice)).
I know video editing is a long and labor-intensive process, and such a
project would be far from trivial with the speed at which the video is
moving, but actually _speaking_ people's language in such a powerful video
could engage many more contributors than merely subtitling it.

Big +1 on that, that video pretty much sums up all the reasons I contribute
to Mozilla, and having a fully localized version would be amazing.

MKV and MP4 should have support for multiple audio tracks.

Multiple audio tracks is actually a nifty idea, IMHO.

Rainer, does that make sense?
