What I need:
I'd like to load my complete po friulian translation of firefox-3.6 in
launchpad. You can see (and load) my last attempts in the queue. These
are po and also xpi forms.
How can I do it ?
Please, can I send to someone of you my po (or my xpi) and then having
back the RIGHT xpi to load in launchpad ?
Can you review my po /xpi translation , give me an advice ?
And, can you tell me the right procedure ? May be I'll need it with
thunderbird or other tools blocked the same in launchpad ....
Claims?:
About Firefox-3.6 I understood there is a block. When I download
firefox-3.6 from launchpad it is a po file (or a pot file). But in
uploading Launchpad wants a xpi file. My Firefox-3.6 complete friulian
translation is a po file and cannot be uploaded. But I don't want to
do again all the work on-line with cut and paste. Five thousand of
sentences ! And it (cut and paste) will be less accurate !
With a lot of difficulty I found the way to build a xpi, a very
adventurous way. It is very difficult to find tools and not alway full
working, or may be difficult in using. I found
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Testing_your_translation but I
cannot follow them: difficult to find right what needed.
Difficult to find valid tool po2xpi in web or in tools in my ubuntu
packages. (I explain: valid for me means easy to use, complete and
from po -> (right) xpi )
Now I've made the xpi as I found in others ( for example it.xpi) and
I tried to upload but launchpad say :
We were unable to import it because either this file did
not originate
in Launchpad, or you removed the tag we use to mark files
exported from
Launchpad.
The reason we require that tag is to prevent translators
who work
offline from inadvertently reverting translations made by
others.
To fix the problem, please get the latest export from
Launchpad, apply
your changes and upload the merged file.
It's not true, I've not removed the tag. I've put the tag from
firefox-3.6.po I've just downloaded from launchpad.
If otherwise I attempt to load the firefox-3.6po, the answer is:
We were unable to import the file because of errors in its
format:
fur.xpi: File is not a zip file
If you use gettext, you can check your file for correct
formatting with
the 'msgfmt -c' command. Please fix any errors raised by
msgfmt and
upload the file again. If you check the file and you don't
find any
error in it, please look for an answer or file a question at
https://answers.launchpad.net/rosetta/
Please apologize me for my poor english writing.
Best regards,
Mauro
I guess the sad news is, I don't know anyone working on launchpad and
Firefox successfully. We tried to make that work a while back, but that
effort died out due to the lack of support on the side of the launchpad
team.
I'm pretty sure there's a ticket, but I can't find it.

I'm ready Seth. I'm always open to learn new tools even more easy or more
powerful.
I'm self confident our community (mozilla, open source) will go to use best
tool for everyone.
Please tell me about the other tool. Is it mozilla translator ? I'm trying
to configurate it. But it seems to me need a hg account on mozilla-central.
Trying the right way for having it, if it is possible for a
translator/user/developer/volunteer. And trying working with it.
May I tell you some observations based on my launchpad and others tools
recent experiences ?
*Actual:*
Our particularity (friulian translation team) is having a big translation
outline (now we are using an addon for changing firefox front off
language...). Our main goal will be pushing 'upstream' this work: firefox,
5000 words/sentences, and then refine it. For this work it is easy working
on a po (as coming from launchpad) or on a set of dtd and properties (or
xpi) and working with upload tools. These forms (dtd, properties, po) are in
about a ready state.
Launchpad is the only I could know it could (potentially) upload a big chunk
of work.
I've seen narro, but not understanding if becoming administrator someone may
be can upload files. And other tools.
For the other tasks, it seams me all tools are enough equivalent ones.
Translating one piece at time is the same with narro, launchpad, or offline
if possible. Helps and tools are needed and welcome.
1. So it is good having memories or glossaries (lokalize, poedit, mozilla
translator ?) made from past or incoming translations and reusing what me or
others did. It is good having fast helps and shortcuts to correct errors (we
have a sufficient but a little old (2005) dictionary, in myspell/aspell dic
and aff forms. We can use it in on-line text (there is a firefox addon) or
installed for gedit, or for openoffice).
Memories are needed because maintaining uniformity in translation. When you
find a good form of translation and may be you have made work to discover
it, it is better you can fastly reach past translations with a search as in
memories or glossaries. So you can use the same form about everywhere. Or,
if you found a better one, you can change it about everywhere.
2. It is good having suggestion from other languages, so having english and
another language translation to discover fastly a meaning (lauchpad,
lokalize ?). So the work other people did to reveal the meaning of an
expression can be re-used.
3. It is useful a good engine (like lokalize ?) to discover peaces of
translation in other translations and fastly composing them to make a new
translation.
4. it is a good thing, having back the translation work (launchpad) in a
chunk or equivalent. For working off-line, for re-using, may for running
correction tools in a chunk ... for mass revisions.
5. it is a wonderful feedback having back fastly the translation on-line in
our applications, with upgrades fastly working for community.
So it is good having connections with 'upstream' main develop lines and
reusing code for new versions.
6. collaborative work (launchpad, narro, ...) on-line. It is useful because
everyone in every moment can 'push the car'. We are volunteers, with our
jobs and problems ...
I wait your news.
Thank you for consideration,
Best Regards
Mauro
