Catalan has landed on v1.1: l10n testing starts tomorrow

Catalan has just landed on our v1.1 nightly builds. We will start testing tomorrow morning (PST)

Expect a number of bugs to appear! ;)

Note to Catalan localizers: as with other locales, there will be truncation issues (I've looked and already seen some ;) ). For these bugs, please follow the same guidelines as those that I've sent out in this thread https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.l10n/n4PTcatmhhA when possible.

Here are the l10n test results for Catalan, going trough the Localization Screen Pass (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnlMJ1WKyPHzdElZbFBNUlZYdkVuVU01d3hBd3N3UXc#gid=0). This was performed on Leo device, using v1.1 Commercial RIL (testing started yesterday and finished today)

There are currently zero Leo blockers in Catalan. However, we do have again a lot of truncation/UI issues. The Catalan localizer is currently going through all the bugs, and when no workaround for the UI ones are found, we will then determine if the bugs are blockers or not (following UX l10n guidelines and blocker guidelines). I'll then report back any possible blockers we've found. We will work on this with the localizer during all next week.

The only actual non-truncation/UI Catalan bug that was found is:

But from what I understand e.me doesn't exactly align with our shipping locales...

All the other bugs are UI/truncation bugs, and there are 21:

We still have to test startup performance with and without Catalan on the devices, which will be done on Monday, in order to determine how much impact adding this locale will have on those.

I'm happy to read that. I think it's great to have the catalan localization.

I just want to remember here that basque people are eager for basque
localization, specially now that it's possible to buy the first phones.

Congratulations to all Mozilla Developers for the good work you are
doing and, as always, many thanks to the whole Mozilla Community.

It would be great to extract also a performance rule or something like
that to know the number of localizations the kind of devices we are
supporting can manage at the same time. This way, we could think about
an strategy to add all the translations that are coming.

I'm talking about solutions that surely you already thought about:
* setting language packs: the most extended ones (en, fr, es), less
extended ones grouping them by proximity (it, ca, eu), ...
* setting phone category tables: this device can manage only the basic
language pack, this one can manage basic pack + 1 zone pack, ...
* developing an automated "ROM image" burner that prepares the OS
versions for all the phone categories and zones (east asia, south asia,
north europe, east europe, south europe, north america, south america...).

This could facilitate enormously the work of Telefónica and other
telephony operators, and at the same time, taking advantage of the free
software community spread all over the world.

Witch are the technical and operational objections for an approximation
like this?
