Hi,

I have a special wish for Pontoon, maybe it is a little exotic.

As you know, I'm translating into two languages, not into one only. Here
my question:

Is it possible to create a new feature of Pontoon that can find out if
strings have already been translated into the respective other language.
I often translate into both languages almost at the same time but
sometimes I can translate into the other language not until later. I
have to browse a lot of strings then to find the translated strings of
the other language. It is especially about the project mozilla.org.
There are a lot of strings to be translated.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

Michael W.

Hi Michael,

On your profile page you can select your preferred locales, so, if strings
are already translated and apporove, they will appear in the right column
under the tab locales and you only need to click to copy.

Hello Michael,

Wim is correct, you can update your profile setting to address this
need. Here are the steps to configure the setting:
https://mozilla-l10n.github.io/localizer-documentation/tools/pontoon/users.html#user-settings

Hi Wim, hi Peiying,

thank you for your replies.

But I think you misunderstood me. Of course, I set the respective
language in the locales tab and it appears even above before all other
languages. But I have to click every string to find the translated
strings of the other language. For Lower Sorbian, for example, there are
still 291 untranslated strings for the mozilla.org project, for Upper
Sorbian 282 strings only. I have to click alle 291 Lower Sorbian strings
to find the 9 strings that are translated into Upper Sorbian but not
into Lower Sorbian. So, what I need is a filter function.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your request, I think it's a great idea!

I assume translation to dsb and hsb are often similar and that you do a lot
of copying, pasting and small post-editing. Is that the case? I'm asking
because we could even go a step further and instead of a filter (or in
addition to it) implement a batch action that would copy translations to
another locale as suggestions.

Similar to this is bug 1267548, which proposes a batch action to copy from
original strings.

In the meantime, I wonder how helpful it would be to set a preferred source
locale in settings, which would show e.g. hsb instead of the en-US in the
source string panel and string list.

Cheers,
Matjaž

Great. I hardly dared to ask because I'm probably the only one who will
use this feature.

Yes, both languages are in fact similar to each other. Copying strings
as suggestions, however, is a little risky because there is the risk to
overlook minor differences.

Sometimes I use the strings from the locales tab even though there are
similar strings in the Machinery tab: For strings with plural rules, for
instance, because all plural strings are copied from the locales tab but
not from the Machinery tab.

Hm,I don't know. I think it's better to be in control of the existing
English strings. In fact, translating from Upper Sorbian into Lower
Sorbian is translating from a secondary language and not from the
primary/original language which is English.
