Hello Vietnamese l10n team,

Hope you are well. I've noticed that your community localization work on
Firefox desktop has become inactive for many releases. With each
unlocalized release, the Firefox user experience becomes progressively
worse, ultimately resulting in their abandoning Firefox in general. Your
locale currently has %number users on Firefox desktop. The usage trend
is currently downward.

I'm interested in learning what the current state of the l10n team is
and how I can help the team update Firefox desktop. I'm interested in
learning what the level of motivation is within the community, what
challenges it may be facing, and if there is currently a plan to update
Firefox desktop.

Please let us know if this is a commitment your l10n team is willing and
able to make and how I might be able to support you. I look forward to
hearing from you.

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks for the heads-up. Occasionally I did check Locamotion[1] and
still saw some new translations updated but the last sign-off was at
Firefox 24[2]. Was that because we didn't get critical strings
translated on time?

Currently there are a few of us (Hai and me; with Thanh only does
translation work) who are monitoring issue tracker and do some
occasional translations. We have been lacking motivation for a while.
In my opinion, the biggest challenge is that people are not really
interested in localization and it's hard to keep them joining
translation sprints. Most of the contribution now is now done by some
individuals, not the team as a whole. We haven't had any plan to update
Firefox desktop yet but I would personally like to keep it going.

Shall we have a Skype/Hangouts/... session sometimes? Perhaps having
active contributors gathered and discussed together to figure out some
solution would be a good idea?

Yes, as you can see here http://mozilla.locamotion.org/vi/firefox/goals
all of the directories listed above the "Developer" directory should be
considered a high-priority. Especially user1 and user2 strings.

I see. Keeping up the motivation can be very difficult. What is it about
localization that you think keeps people from being involved? What can
the l10n-drivers do to keep you three motivated and continue to make the
experience worth your time and attention?

Yes, I think that is a great idea, if it will be beneficial to the
community. When works for you?

Hi Duong,

I wanted to follow up with you here. Let me know if we can set up a time
for a call.

Also, the Firefox team will be launching a pilot for an automatic
translation feature in Vietnam. Important to the success of this pilot
is having the UI for it translated into Vietnamese. Would you be able to
translate those strings by 11 July?

They can be found here:
-
http://mozilla.locamotion.org/vi/firefox/browser/chrome/browser/translation.properties.po
-
http://mozilla.locamotion.org/vi/firefox/browser/chrome/browser/translation.dtd.po

I'm so sorry that you've been ill. I wish you all the best recovering,
and hope that it is a speedy recovery at that.

I'm glad that you're better. I'm fine with moving to 15:30. Are there
any objections? Just so that we avoid any VoIP issues and we can focus
on the discussion uninterrupted, shall we plan on having an IRC chat?
What IRC channel best suits everyone?

Thanks,

Hi Jeff,

I'm fine with 15:30. I would suggest #kgcd on freenode if it doesn't
need to be a channel in Mozilla network; because most of current
vi-translators are usually there.

Hi everyone,

There are some high priority strings in Firefox for Vietnamese that need
to be translated for 34. Could you please take a look at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1072743 and provide
translations for the strings in comment 13?

Thanks,
Jeff
