Hi,
Please take a look at recent requests for adding a new language
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mozilla.dev.l10n.new-locales

There's a lot more information that we need about yourself, what you
want to localize, how many people are involved, etc.

Hello,

I am sorry for the incomplete message.

I am lobsang Tsering, i am currently pursuing Software Engineering at VIT University, vellore India.
Yes I was born in Tibet and later came to India as refugee, I believe, contributing to open source project like Mozilla Firefox is best way to give back to society.

I request you to permit me to translate Mozilla Firefox to Tibetan language.

1) What Mozilla product are you hoping to localise?
Mozilla Firefox desktop, android and iOS App (Mozilla Firefox browser)

2) Which language code should be used? (ISO-639-1, ISO-639-3, country code).

Language: Tibetan བོད་ཡིག་
Language family : Sino-Tibetan
Writing system : Tibetan alphabet
Language codes :

ISO 639-1 bo
ISO 639-2 tib (B)
bod (T)
ISO 639-3 bod

3) How many plural forms are in the language? To give an example,
how would you translate the following phrases:

- *0 rocks* : རྡོ་ཀླད་ཀོར་
- *1 rock* : རྡོ་གཅིག་
- *2 rocks* : རྡོ་གཉིས་
- *3 rocks* : རྡོ་གསུམ་
- *4 rocks * : རྡོ་བཞི་
- *5 rocks* : རྡོ་ལྔ་
- *10 rocks* : རྡོ་བཅུ་
- *20 rocks* : རྡོ་ཉེ་ཤུ་
- *100 rocks* : རྡོ་བརྒྱ་ཐམ་པ
- *1000 rocks* : རྡོ་གཅིག་སྟོང་
- *I see 0 rocks on the ground* : ངས་ཐང་ལ་རྡོ་ཀླད་ཀོར་མཐོང་གིས་འདུག་
- *I see 1 rock on the ground* : ངས་ཐང་ལ་རྡོ་གཅིག་མཐོང་གིས་འདུག་
- *I see rocks on the ground* : ངས་ཐང་ལ་རྡོ་མང་པོ་མཐོང་གིས་འདུག་

4) Are you hoping to localise alone or do you have friends that will join you?

Currently i am only one who will be translating. I am native speaker.

Can you clarify this part? Does the noun change when the number changes,
or in the last 3 examples? I can't tell from your translations, since (I
assume) they include the number.

I would strongly suggest to start with a smaller project than Firefox
and Firefox for Android. Since this language is starting from scratch,
if will require months or years to reach a completion level suitable for
release. And that's only the first part of the process, you'd still need
testing and keeping up with the localization once you're ready to ship,
since Firefox is a constantly evolving project.

Starting with a smaller project, like Focus (for iOS it depends on the
OS support), and then try to find new contributors is the approach that
I'd suggest for a brand new locale.

Plural forms is denoted by adding special words after noun like རྣམས། དག་ ཚོ། གྲངས (number of objects). Noun dose not change like in English when number changes. In translation above it followed NOUN + Number of objects = plural rule.

Example
༡) work ལས་ཀ་ works ལས་ཀ་དེ་དག་
༢) man མི་ men མི་དག or མི་རྣམས་ Three men མི་གསུམ་

Thank your for you kind suggestion. I will translate Firefox Focus for iOS. I just downloaded it and tested if it can display Tibetan font. It looks good.

In software, the number is normally a variable.

For example, you don't have '10 rock', but you have '$number rock".
English will have 2 forms:

"$number rock" (used only for 1)
"$number rocks" (used for any other number)

How would you manage this, given that you can't put the number directly
in the string, since it changes dynamically?

I've also realized that Tibetan is available in CLDR, and they suggest
"no plural forms"

I'll make sure Delphine (the person in charge of these projects) sees
this request, and she'll follow up.

Francesco

P.S. please do not reply multiple times to the same email, it becomes
really hard to follow

Can use Tibetan number system, since you using numbers system (as variable ) after a noun then there is no difference between singular and plural nouns.

" 1 number rock " རྡོ་ ༡
" 2 or more number of rocks " རྡོ་ ༢

Welcome Lobsang, it's great to have you on board :)

I can set up Tibetan on Pontoon, no problem at all. Just one thing:
I'm actually not adding new locales to Focus for iOS anymore, because
its roadmap and development are currently unknown/on pause. So there's
no guarantee to when we can ship updates and new locales.

However, I can enable Focus for Android if you'd like:
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/focus-for-android/

Once that's done and if you wish to continue, I can also enable
Firefox iOS, which is a larger project.

I'll follow-up in a separate email directly to you with more details
shortly about all this.
Thanks again for your interest in localizing Mozilla products - and
welcome on board :)

cheers
delphine
