Hi,

I'm working on investigating the importance of some new features in
Firefox. One thing that Chrome has that Firefox doesn't at the moment
is Instant Translation - I'm looking for people in every locale who
would be prepared to try some existing solutions and share their feedback.

Background
----------
When I've done field research, I've seen that this is a very popular
feature of Chrome in some countries such as Russia and Brazil. But in
talking with people in the Mozilla community, this doesn't mean that it
will be a good service for all Firefox users - Raivis in Latvia
explained to me just how poor Google's Instant Translation service is in
Latvian, for example.

So, I am looking for your input both on how we should implement this
feature and on the quality of services for your locale. Doing it the
way Chrome does it might be expensive from a resource and licensing
point of view.

Things to try will be:
a. Instant translate in Chrome
b. Translate this! addon in Firefox
c. Maxthon's instant translation implementation
d. your views on which translation services are best for your locale (if
any!)
e. your views on the utility of such services in your locale:
ei.do people read foreign language content?
eii.do they tend to use a localised build of Firefox?

I will send instructions and a questionnaire to make it easy to collate
all this data next week.

Right now, I'm looking for people who are interested to help. If you
care about this feature and have some time, I'd really like to work with
you.

So - if you're interested, please sign up here (where it says, "Name" -
I've left space for 3 people per locale).
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al9__hKNwbafdEpkbkE5X3JlcTNmbFVGa1JsdmxvQmc

and send me an email (you don't have to post your address on the Google
doc).

Many thanks

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I think this feature is popular in Spanish speaking countries, but the
main concern I have here is that is a service provided by a third party
out of our control, in this case Google.

Do we know if Google has a clear policy about the translation requests
they receive using this service in terms of privacy?

I don't feel comfortable giving our users the ability to translate sites
without them knowing what's done with their data.

Regards.

Hey Patrick,

from my point of view, we have to check out some statistics in order
to see if it is worth it.

* First of all, we have to know at least some countries who are using
it and their feedback.
* we have to find "template" text - maybe an article - in English
where the mozilians around the globe are going to provide feedback on
how accurate is the translated text in their native language. With
that, we are going to evaluate google's translations in a variety of
language.

These stats are really useful because we don't want to build an
addon/tool which is not translating well and only a small amount of
people using it.

Hi Nukeador,

I'm looking for input on all services and specifically the best in each
locale. The policies implemented by every service will need
interpretation as part of that. With any proprietary service (at least,
any good one), usage of the service benefits the service too: it adds to
the body of bi-lingual text (corpora).

Any guidance from l10n experts or others in this is most welcome.

Thanks Chris

Here's my approach:

I am currently running quantified research in 15 countries to gauge
interest in the feature. It was reported as of very high interest in
both Brazil and Russia in other research I've run, but not so high in
other countries (for example, Germany).

I need to get to an assessment of how many Firefox users will be
interested in the feature, based on this research. It isn't easy, but
the simpler our assumptions are, the easier it will be. The hardest
thing will be estimating user desire for the feature.

On the "template" article - I will provide an example to translate in
and out of a language, but I'm looking to reps and l10n experts to
challenge assumptions about how, and how much, such a feature would
used. I don't think it's purely English content that is of interest,
depending on where you are in the world, or indeed, to what extent it is
of interest.

Does this address your question?

Thank you Patrick.
In your first mail you shared the "WHAT" and I tried to provide you the "HOW".
But certainly we think in the same frequency here. :)

I am really curious - looking forward - to see the results!

Hi there!

I just added my name and email address for es-ES locale.

Google, along with Bing, are some of the most popular MT services. However, systranet.com or even Moses are really good. The latter is a free open source machine translation supported by the European Commission. You may find more info here: http://www.statmt.org/moses/
