I used to be a pretty active user of Mozilla Stumbler. I would run the app
almost all the time and intentionally drive around unmapped areas.

I've become less active over time because it's been a while since I've
heard about the project. Is Mozilla Stumbler still alive? Is the data it
collects still useful? I'd be happy to start contributing again if it would
be helpful.

According to bug 1422139
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1422139>, the project is
no longer maintained. cc: Mike Kaply in case he has more insight.

Stumbler contribution metrics were watched closely until Firefox Android MLS collection scaled up to a point where it was providing nearly all of the collection. AFAIK, these metrics are no longer maintained.
As for the future of Stumbler, that is a good question, I don’t have any info on that.

That's about the stumbler code in firefox though, not the app?

Fair enough. How about the data itself? Even if the app isn't getting new
features or bug fixes, is the data it collects still useful? Should I keep
stumbling?

Hi John,

You can keep stumbling - we do collect data from android stumbler clients
still.

The practical reality is - the aggregate data collection by Firefox Android
users completely overwhelms the contributions made by the dedicated
stumbler app.

We are slowly decommissioning parts of the stumbler though - the
leaderboard in particular is scheduled to be shutdown in the near future.

Yes, that bug is about the Stumbler code in Firefox, not the Stumbler
app. I don't know the status of the app.

Hi,

I thought the leaderboard is down already  ^^
I couldn't find it lately.
Or are you talking about the statistics page?

When was the cooperation with open cell shutdown? (they aren't mentioned anymore on the statistics page)

I was always wondering why the Firefox app works so well. Does it collect the data in the background, too? (when you aren't browsing but have something like Google maps open)
Does it work with a hook (passively) or does it pull (actively) to get new info on GPS and the rest?

Regards,
Felix
