Used to run Venkman for debugging during extension development. In Tb it
became somewhat instable with recent versions; FX nowadays has
integrated debugging for JS. But do FX (and TB) offer a real
JS/XUL/chrome debugging mode to support extension development with the
integrated Web developer tools?
At #devtools I was told :

I' was not able to find it (not with standard FX 20, nor with nightly).
Any pointer for that?

You want to flip the preference devtools.chrome.enabled to true. The
debugger works, with some limitations, but they are being worked on. I
think that the debugger in the latest Aurora and Nightly builds can
properly debug JS Modules and chrome scripts.

Yes, but be aware that using "Step into" bricks it. :-(

Also I'm on
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686 on x86_64; rv:22.0) Gecko/20130505 Firefox/22.0
and have flipped that prefs to true I can't find how to work with the
extensions XUL/JS (it's an independent XUL window, so the cursor
pointing to select an element on it doesn't work).
Is there any helpful page(s)/link/pointer to help here?
