Fascinating niche idea. Might there be other types of lockdown or
environment needs that could be delivered via a generalized but
tailorable solution? Are there existing Firefox or Thunderbird
extensions which can help?

Hello,

I should first say that I LOVE Firefox.org and realize the importance of
Open Source to break down the digital divide, thus creating a third
world to modern functioning society phenomenon.
The reason I am writing is because I have a real passion for developing
a "kids-safe" email environment. I have researched many of the products
available; which might I add come with a cost. I believe that
Thunderbird with Gmail could provide a the perfect median for the first
real fully functional email solution for kids. In order for this to
happen though, a few changes will need to be available.
First a little background: I wanted to find an email median that would
be safe for my seven year old son. After much stumbling, I thought of an
idea where I could set rules for my sons Gmail account, using a desktop
application that would delete any emails that where not from a chosen
list. I have to say that I first thought Outlook. I then decided to try
Thunderbird as it is free, and I am trying to develop an idea that I can
easily share with the world that has no cost. After installing
Thunderbird I quickly realized that you have the perfect rule: "Only
from those in my contact list." I set up his rule to delete all emails
except those in his contact list...works wonderfully.
As I started to write a paper on this to share with friends and family,
I quickly realized that this would only work for kids that did not
understand how to manipulate the contacts list or the rules.
This is where I am now: I want to broadcast a solution that will work
for parents with kids from 5 to 15. This means that an add on would have
to be made to lock down the contacts list and the rules list to only
allow a password (which will be held by the parent) to make changes.
I Strongly urge you you to develop this add on for Thunderbird so I can
spread the gospel of Mozilla and Open Source. I just need a simple
password enabled rules-contacts feature. I believe with all of my heart
that this is marketable and fresh. I have recently added this request in
the add-on forum with no responses yet, so I thought that I would go
straight to the top (you).

Please consider this as not only a plea from a Mozilla loving parent,
but also from a marketing standpoint that will draw more people to the
Mozilla experience and Open Source infrastructure/future.

Regardless, I support all that you are, do, and will become. I wear my
Firefox bumper sticker on both my vehicles with pride.

With Love,

Mark Stout
