I'm totally new to Thunderbird, starting to use it a month or so ago
with beta 3.04. My question is, if I want to move to the rc1, should I
install it over what I've got or remove 3.04 from my system first?

Thanks,
Tim

If you have installed 3.0 beta 4 you are (per default) on beta channel
update: when rc1 is released you can update using "check updates..."
menu item.

Hi Dedalus;

I can't find this feature, would you help me out? I rifled through all
the menu items but must be missing it. I'm running:

> Lightning/1.0pre Thunderbird/3.0b4

Install it over what you've got, I recommend, as that's what I've done
moving from Beta 2 to Beta 3, and again from Beta 3 to Beta 4. That's
generally how Thunderbird installations work, which is nice.

<doh!>

My eyes just raced over the greyed-out phrase "Check for Updates."

If it's greyed out then Thunderbird thinks it doesn't have sufficient
file permissions to update you, so it won't. This might be because
Thunderbird was installed using an admin account and you run with more
limited privileges.

I think you'll have to manually update. Installing on top of the same
directory should work fine. (I've argued in bugs that the menu item
should not be disabled, and that we should tell people "there's an
update available, contact the person who originally installed it".)
