I was wondering if there will be built-in functionality for Importing/
Exporting vCards in future versions of Thunderbird? Either full
address books, or single entries. If so, which vCard version will it
use (2.1, 3.0, ?)?

Thanks,

Have a look at https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html
It has many useful features for the TB/AB, eg. vacard export 3.0

I have that installed, and it works well. I was just hoping that vCard
functionality would be part of the core functionality in future
versions of TB.

Funny, I was just a moment ago reading about the forthcoming CardDAV [1]
standard and it mentions a WIP for vCard 4 [2]

Seeing that vCard 3.0 was approved as standards RFC [3] in Spetember
1998 I would be surprised if there is much demand for anything less than v3.

1. http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-vcarddav-carddav/
2. http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-vcarddav-vcardrev-09.txt
3. http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/rfc2426/

I am quite surprised that vCard functionality isn't built-in, but having
said that, the only place I've ever needed it was adding an addressbook
to my DECT handsets at home.

With an addition to the WebDAV/CalDAV family though, it becomes far more
compelling...

Actually, vCard 2.1 support is built in, though, as you point out, far
behind the times. Unfortunately, the code is completely unmaintainable,
so we're going to need to new code in order to get modern vCard
support. We're going to be putting more thought into our high-level
addressbook roadmap in the coming months; with luck that will lead us
somewhere good..
