The tabbed browsing preference:

When opening a bookmark group:

( ) Add tabs (x) Replace existing tabs

doesn't appear to have any effect any more. When choosing the "Open
All in Tabs" folder item, bookmarks get always added to the current tab.

Additionally, it is quite confusing it always replaces the current
tab (even when it is not <about:blank>) with the first from the
bookmark group/folder being opened. So it is neither acting as
"Replace existing tabs", nor like "Add tabs". Holding Ctrl while
clicking on "Open All in Tabs" adds the bookmarks after the last
tab, but I find either this or "Replace existing tabs" more
intuitive or useful (may be I've been just more used to the old
behavior).

As far as I see this is just the same with Firefox 5 (haven't tried
with 4 or 3.6). I guess this option and the UI should be removed so
it won't cause confusion.

Yes, this is <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=664101>.

Meanwhile it has been added to the Release Notes (Known Issues), too.

I should know to read the "Known Issues" first, before restating
them. Thanks for pointing it out and sorry about the noise.

Would fixing 664101 also take care of the Home Icon bug reported at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=616601

Out of interest, when you choose "Replace existing tabs", what would you
expect
a) when you click Back
b) when you currently have more tabs than the group you're opening

I would prefer that "Back" doesn't restore previous tabs as with the
old behavior, but to have a context menu option to "Undo Replace
Tabs" (like "Undo Close Tab").

> b) when you currently have more tabs than the group you're opening

I'm not sure how does this make a difference? I expect all current
tabs replaced by the set of tabs contained in the folder/group being
opened.

That's probably not going to be possible, sorry.

Unfortunately this means that any surplus tabs would be permanently
destroyed.

In my opinion, a useful solution for this, in terms of UI, would be to
*close* all previously opened tabs, (letting them be visible in "Undo
Closed Tabs") and open the set of bookmarks as entirely new tabs, thus
not reusing back/forward, etc.

It should not be our default pref settings though, as its not as easily
discoverable "what happened to my old tabs" (and default should be open
in entirely new tabs preserving old tabs).

We could even leverage Sessionrestore to save those tabs. Call them Undo
Closed Groups?

What if the number of surplus tabs is more than the number of tabs that
Session Store will save?

There's a limit? I know that therube has upward of 200 tabs open at most
times. (How one manages 200 open tabs baffles me frankly).

On closed tabs, yes.

You save a session full of tabs just before closing all of them and
opening a new bookmark group/folder.

Thinking more about it, I don't mind having previous tabs
permanently destroyed as long as "Replace Tabs" replaces the whole
current set of tabs. I don't remember needing to go back to the
previous set of tabs after opening a bookmarked group, so far.

I take it you'll volunteer Misak to write the patch ;-)

I'd just steal some code from the Session Manager extension.

You might not, but others might. Basing design decisions on what an
individual person -- any individual person -- considers "acceptable
loss" is probably not a good idea.

I can offhand give you a good case for wanting to go back to the
previous group of tabs -- the most trivial one: user mistake. User opens
a set of tabs forgetting he still needed something from the previous
set. User wants to go back...

Yes, it is my personal opinion an experience. I have not meant it
as final solution, but as workaround, for starters. If enough
people agree with it, it might become not only my opinion. If not,
it would bu just my opinion, but I have to state, don't you agree?
Do you think any design decision would be based solely on my opinion?

Yeah, user mistake is a reason one would want to have an undo
functionality, but prior SM 2.0 there was no "Undo Close Tab", even
(w/o resorting to extensions). I usually (though not always) open a
group of tabs in a window which has a single blank tab, so I think
my opinion sounds reasonable, if everything else is impossible. In
my opinion, with the new "Open All in Tabs" item, it is harder to
open a group/folder accidentally than it was previously, also.
