I am a software engineer. I have not found it easy to find usable
information on color management. Usable by non graphics designers and
casual photographers and other folks not in the business of printing
things in color, that is. I don't know where to post this, put I
thought I would try here and see what happens.

If you can compare and contrast RGB to CMYK and Pantone color
management, will you please write ICC for Dummies.?

->To print from Firefox with ICC

Get a new printer that supports ICC profiles. These are NOT the $200
to $300 printers
For examples of these printers, go here
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/printercompatibility/

You need an ICC profile for your printer, paper, driver , and ink.
Here is an example http://www.inkjetart.com/cgi-bin/profiles.cgi

When you hit print in Firefox, select a printer and then drill down
into printer properties to further select options. YMMV

->To create images for view in Firefox with embedded ICC information
Get a full featured Graphics Program comparable to Adobe PhotoShop CS3

->To view in Firefox
Get a new monitor that supports ICC profiles.
Profile your monitor

->Do it yourself profiles. See lprof – an ICC profiler,
My guess is that creating your own profile is slightly less
complicated than writing a non Trivial Firefox extension, but more
expensive.

-> The windows control panel color applet lets me associate monitor
profiles with printing and scanning devices. In 25 words or less,
what happens when you do this?

-> What happens if I select printer properties and change it to use a
different color profile than either the default set with the XP color
applet or the one set in FF?

-> If I want to print from Firefox, what happens, when FF is set up
for one profile, my printers default is setup with another. I think
this is what ICC is all about, "Its used to intelligently-transform,
device-unique, color information between devices"

->Taking Pictures with Digital Cameras

Many Cameras use exifJPEG (JPEG Encoded File with Exif Metadata) file
format, and your camera may not automatically embed ICC_PROFILE data;
however, color matching in the Camera makers supplied editing software
(or in a program like PhotoShop) may have an option to do this.

Maybe I should have called this the Readers Digest version of ICC for
Dummies.
