Often, when I click links to PDF files, nothing happens. I can copy
the link, open Safari, paste in the link and get the PDF, but it won't
open in Firefox 3.5.5 (Mac OS X 10.4.11). Sometimes it works, but
often it doesn't, and I cannot tell why here is a difference. I prefer
to use Firefox, but may have to go back to Safari if this problem
persists.

Thanks.

It is possible you have an extension conflict. Try to reproduce that problem in safe mode: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

You'll need this extension to allow the viewing of pdfs inside Firefox
on os x. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7518

Adobe has decided to only make a Safari compatible plugin for Adobe Reader.
