I can click on a ftp link and it opens in firefox but doesn't allow
uploading or downloading to the site, even if I am logged in. What am I
overlooking? I can do this with a ftp client, but am curious why not
with firefox. I remember that internet explorer allowed this but I don't
use that browser any more. Thanks.

You should be able to download (no option to upload that I know of, though).

Go for instance to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/
You should be able to download the files from there just using firefox
(for instance ls-lR.gz). If the file is a web page or plain text, it
will be rendered by default, but you could still store it with 'Save as'
or with the context menu from the file list.

You could also install the FireFTP extension.
