documentation for file/folder view

Hi,

file:///<some_dir> (and FTP/etc.) looks very pretty. Is it documented
somewhere how I can accomplish this same effect with other protocols?
I'm thinking in terms of wishing to use this view to server as a
pretty browser to browse webdav shares, e.g. a webdav server
extension. What type of data (content-type, content) would it output?
