For years and years I've gotten in the habit of using the location bar
like google's old "feeling lucky" search. I type in one or two key
words, hit enter and am directed right to the website I want. But
somehow ask.com has infiltrated my firefox installation. Now when I
type in a key word on the location bar I end up with an ask.com search
results page, usually with the site I'm looking for at the top of the
list, but even though the inconvenience is very minor it rankles me to
no end. I have tried reinstalling firefox to get back my default
settings have poked around through tools/options to try to restore the
default for the location bar, have installed the 3.1 Beta 3 version
and still cannot get back my default location bar settings. Please
help me!

Third party toolbars can be very nasty. Ask.com in particular requires you
to refuse it twice and even then still installs it on another browser. To fix Firefox

ask has probably overwritten the default value for keyword.url, and has
written those changes to your profile.

to reset it, try the following (note, their extension may check the
value on startup, so removing any ask.com extension first, per David's
reply, is a requirement):

- go to about:config
- search for "keyword.URL" in the filter list
- right click on keyword.URL and select "Reset"

That should restore the behaviour to what you expect.
