minimonth not working in an old extension

I am trying to revive an old extension which is using the minimonth <minimonth id="xxx"/>.
It shows month and year in top line, but no day numbers below.
It uses minimonth.css from calendar.
The minimonth is called in a dropdown.
Anybody has an idea what might need to be changed?

DomInspector shows that the textfields for day number do exist, but they have no value fields.
If I add a value in DomInspector, tht is displyed.
If I add a value in DomInspector, tht is displyed.

not sure whether related:
error console: ReferenceError: setBooleanAttribute is not defined in minimonth.xml.
That function is defined in calendar-ui-util.js
