One thought on the collections - could there be a way to add all of
the addons in a collection to your browser in a single shot - a "Add
all" button?
For example, the Web Developer collection. I am subscribed to it, it
is a favorite. I would like to install all of them. It would be
quite nice to have a way to Add All in that collection.
Maybe in addition, there could be a way to add only a subset with
checkboxes and a batch install.
It's just a pain to go through the interface for adding each one, one
at a time, with the lag in the install (# of seconds for each one to
wait before the button is enabled), then the separate window for when
it completes and the prompt to restart firefox.
Anyway, just some thoughts.
Thanks!
The two main issues are:
1) the legal issues involved with distribution of add-ons aren't as
clear with installing a bundle of add-ons created by a third party as
with a third party just creating a list and the user choosing to install
them individually.
2) (main reason) Add-on first-run experiences are completely
inconsistent and some add-ons aren't even compatible with each other.
Installing multiple add-ons at once can totally baffle a novice user
such that they think there is no way to undo the damage.
For example, see my post on this here:
http://blog.fligtar.com/2008/10/16/responsible-first-run-usage/
and imagine someone new to Firefox restarting to find that.
With Fashion Your Firefox we were able to install multiple add-ons at
once because they were pre-selected, so we had permission from the
authors and knew they had acceptable first-run experiences.
But with users able to add any add-ons they want to a collection, it's a
lot harder of a problem to solve than meets the eye.
Justin
problem compounds if a user already has add-ons that conflict even if the
bundle is ok. Seems like a good solution for future would be to allow
Firefox to recognize add-ons that were installed either as a bundle or in
rapid succession and let users undo the last installed extension/set.
Something for dev though.

and subscribing to a collection doesn't mean subscribing to all of the add-on's
in the collection automatically?
