Hello Mozilla Reps, (and Firefox Students),

I am a Firefox Student Ambassador, and would like to host a event similar
to App-in-a-box day, but has some additions in it.

What We (Myself and the team), plan to conduct a week-long training on Web
(HTML/CSS/JS) targeted for freshmens,

The modal for the event would be:

Day One: [Introduction]

- Introduction to Mozilla Community, Firefox Student Ambassadors
- Introduction to Mozilla, Firefox, and Open Web
- Introduction to Firefox OS
- Introduction to Webmaker
- Day 2 Agenda Discussion.

Day Two: [The Basics]

- Introduction to HTML/CSS/JS
- HTML 101 . [Basic HTML elements, Document Model]
- CSS Basics. Introduction to styles. Way to use CSS
- Sample Project: HTML/CSS (in FFOS)
- Assignment Projects / Introduction of Day 3 Agenda

Day Three: [The Basics II : Intermediate CSS]

- Introduction to CSS. Intro about CSS3
- Individual Projects on HTML/CSS (A bit advanced) (for FFOS)
- Interactive sessions. Ask-what-you-don't-know
- Introduction to Javascript.

Day Four: [The Basics of Javascript]

- Revision of HTML/CSS
- The Document Object Model
- Javascript Syntaxes
- Sample Example Project
- Simple Assignments / Discussion of Day 5 Agenda

Day Five: [Javascript]

- HTML/CSS/Basic JS Revision
- The Web in Action. (Intermediate Examples using HTML/CS/JS)
- QA Sessions / Feedbacks and everything

Day Six: [The Firefox OS]

- Introduction. Using FFOS in phone/browser
- Using your Web App as a FFOS App
- Conversion of all previous projects and assignments to FFOS Apps.

Day Seven: [The Party]

- Swags/Certificates Distribution (if possible).
- Feedback Collection.
- Mozilla Club's Introduction.
- End of The Event.

My 2 cents: It will be a great event because we are also teaching people to
learn the web as well as getting contributors for the mozilla community.

I would be glad to know what you think about this event, and lets start
tweaking this event!

Cheers,

Nootan Ghimire

Hello all,

I like the sound of it. This type of event will be more helpful in the
context of developing countries (like Nepal). But I think we might need to
work on the time frame. A seven day event looks quite unconvincing to me,
both economically and practically.

In case you thought is other way: The event will run 2-4 hours each day.

I got that. But how convincing is it going to be "going to the same event
for a week", booking venue (even for hours) for a week?

Originally intended to do a college level event by student ambassadors. So:

Everyone will come to their college for a week (as usual) :)

How many students are you expecting for the event? I agree with Surit,
finishing off the whole event in a 2-day weekend would be better than a
7-day event. But again, it also depends on the enthusiasm of the
participants. From past experience, I think the number will start to fall
towards the end of such a long event. Cheers and good luck!

Yallow all,

Here is my idea/suggestion for Nootan:
Instead of doing a week long event continuously how about hosting
sessions/classes once or twice a week and continue it next week. Give the
attendees assignments or anything they want to show for the next week's
session.

Find a suitable time that is going waste (happens a lot in engineering
classes). And motivate them to attend the session instead of wasting their
time, Do not force :D
एकजना आए नि आओस्, राम्रो आओस्।

What do others say about this?

Regards

This sounds like a good idea to me! And I think it makes the event exciting
too. What do others say?

a week long event seems more beneficial than one or two days. making the
participants to attend till the end depends on management too.....Nootan,
are you planning to conduct it at HCOE?

how could this type of event is beneficial for developing countries(like
Nepal)? eager to know :)

Hey everybody,
There is a lot of topic to cover here.
So maybe finish it in 2 weeks ,2/3 day per week.
1st week- Learning HTML5
2nd week- About Mozilla
We can also ask them to build a static webpage after the 1st week's
training and then teach them to convert it into webapp for Firefox OS in
the 2nd week.

cheers

I have some crazy suggestions.

-Make the training a month long ( or more if need be)
-Only 3-4 days a week
-Teach the same thing for the 1st and 2nd day of the week
-Give the students a class-work in the third day, but allow them to "cheat"
-Give them an assignment for the next week (allowing them to choose a very
simple web designing project in the first week and dividing it into <insert
no. of weeks> small parts - a part for each week)
-Allow (but don't mandate) them to present their accomplishment at the end
of the course (a simple demo can also be motivating)
-Have fun!

A month long would be too crazy! And you cannot expect the volunteers to
devote 3-4 days every week for a month. The interest would also fade away
in such a long course. I like the idea of few sessions for a week and a
week long hacking on the other week.
