Hi,
This is perhaps overdue but I've been rather busy the past few weeks and
unfortunately I did everything except this. But well, better late than
never right? Anyway, I recently set out on a 3 day mission with my
fellow reps from Kenya - Alex, Victor and Cliff to spread our mission in
Rwanda on the 6th of June. This was the second in a planned series of
tours we hope to set out on in the long run with Uganda being the first
destination we toured late last year. This was however more than just a
normal evangelism campaign for Mozilla, we went there to impart
knowledge on the locals about Open Web technologies and teach as many of
them as time would allow about web development as well as show them the
benefits of using the former to do the latter. This was a well balanced
team as each one of us managed to tackle a different area quite well and
in a manner that the others couldn't have. This consequently helped us
understand each other's strengths and weaknesses much better and allowed
us to better plan for our future activities.
It was an awesome experience, we held some test runs on what we wanted
to achieve during the Summer Code campaign and the results were really
encouraging. Amongst our audiences included students, lecturers, web
devs, mobile app devs, other techies, business executives, government
representatives among others. The tour was pretty much hands-on
throughout with practical demos being given wherever applicable. We
centered around HTML 5 as a cross platform tool that can be used to
create apps but unfortunately we didn't have a B2G device to show these
apps running there as well. However, we did run an HTML 5 app on desktop
and mobile browsers and even compiled it into a hybrid mobile app to
show how leveraging HTML 5 and other Open Web technologies can really
save a lot of time, effort and costs involved traditionally in achieving
the same.

The tour was a great success, more than we had actually anticipated - we
even got some contacts who will help us to complete localizing the
Swahili version of Firefox that we all know is way overdue :-) I would
do this allover again and I hope the next time we do the same in a
different destination country the results will be even more promising.
I'm glad that being in ReMo gives me a chance to make such a difference.
Cheers!
