to For planning and participating in the Dev Derby contest
Hi all,
In the last meeting we agreed on some decisions to help our plans move
forward. Of course we really want more feedback and would like to see more
discussion in the list. We'd really appreciate your feedback and discussion
on these decisions before we commit to them.
1. New contest will be quarterly
I've tried running monthly events before, it's a lot of work and you don't
get a break. We just don't currently have enough people contributing to run
the contest monthly. When we ramp up we can run more than one contest
simultaneously. I think it will be easier to run 3 contests at once - find
3 topics at once, find judges for 3 contests at once, write 3 blog posts at
once - and get breaks in between than to be constantly running the contest.
2. Prizes will be gift cards
We're going to contact legal to find out if we must specify the vendor or
if we can simply say it's a gift card and the value. We're considering
Amazon and the Gear Store. We need to consider customs and shipping as well
as the amount of work for those administering the prizes.
We haven't ruled out things like MDN or Dev Derby specific swag but this
will take longer and can just be something nice we include. Or send out
once a year to all the winners. We can still do it, it just doesn't have to
be part of the official prizes.
What do you think? We really would love to hear about regional issues with
gift cards, if Amazon is still prohibitive in your area, what would be
ideal instead. In your region (or a region you're familiar with) would gift
cards actually be a bad idea?
Call for more volunteers
I'm also going to update the email I sent to Reps a few months ago so that
we can send it out again asking for more volunteers. If you know people who
would like to help you don't need to wait for this email to be ready, just
invite them to join the list and/or IRC channel! #devderby
I know several people volunteered to help with the website and things like
that. We'll have some opportunities to help with that soon.
