Hi all,

I'm very glad for all of you who have been interested in helping.

Right now progress on relaunching the contest is stalled because we need at
least one other volunteer to join the leadership team to head up the
development and technical side of relaunching the contest.

Every employee I've talked to about this project has been very excited, and
we have several who are waiting in the wings to support us.

Being a leader doesn't mean doing it on your own, it means keeping track of
what decisions need to be made, making sure to collect the information
needed to make those decisions, and then making sure they are made in a
timely fashion. It also means interacting with other volunteers on the
project to make sure they have tasks that suit their skills and available
time. As well, it means helping set realistic development timelines, and
making sure things are being completed on time.

At this point, we also need a development lead capable of picking up any
development that needs to be done for the project to progress. Ideally,
this person can also help mentor volunteers, but as I said, we have
employees happy to mentor, they just can't put the actual work in.

The first contest planned is heavily webmaker focused. If you've been
wanting to contribute to webmaker but need a technical challenge, helping
this contest is perfect. We've planned the new version to be a bridge
between MDN and Webmaker. It's really exciting, I just do not have the
skills necessary to drive this project myself.

If you are interested in joining me, and have time to make this project a
top priority please let me know!

Hey Majken,

I'm quite interested in this effort and would be willing to help with it.
Could you please let me know how I can help and get started in this regard?

Hey Kensie,

I’m interested in helping you out with some dev time. I won’t be free enough to help you out with that till late september but hopefully something is better than nothing ;)

I’ve got a lot of experience w/ how webmaker tech works having been staff on webmaker for the past year so that should help shave some build times down ;)

Thanks everyone,

For more information I would suggest looking through the Dev Derby archives
(there isn't too much!) -
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mozilla.community.devderby - start
with the most recent threads, and work you way back.

Then there are also some threads on Discourse, which is where we wanted to
keep the technical discussion since we'd be working with Community IT on
infrastructure.

https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/t/hacking-dev-derby/249
https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/t/devderby-lets-get-started/504
https://discourse.mozilla-community.org/t/devderby-testing-demostudio/403

Hopefully that background will give you enough information to answer your
questions.

For anyone interested let's continue discussing on the Dev Derby
list/group. Links for sign-up here:

Thanks so much guys!

Hi Kensie,

This came in a very crucial juncture of time- Just a couple of days ago I
was discussing with :Debloper and :kaustavdm about how devderby may hugely
impact the new developer relations initiative and how crucial it is to
bring it back from hiatus.

I would like to help the project in any way possible but I also won't be
able to contribute much to the dev work till early September.

I have been going through the discussions at discourse and also the master
tracking bug at bugzilla, seems that there are several unanswered
questioned which are blocking the dev work. For the time being wouldn't it
be prudent to first try and get answers to as many questions as we can ?

The design first steps etherpad have a few points which may need a bit
more clarification. Can you arrange a IRC community meeting where we can
track down and point out the blockers to get them the attention they need.

Avik,

Thanks for your help!

What I'd love to do is allow you to have a devderby.etherpad.mozilla.org
account so that you can make a pad to capture the questions you think need
answering, and let's see if we can brainstorm answers async.

We currently have Thursdays 3pm UTC reserved for Dev Derby meetings. Does
that time work for everyone or do we need to try to schedule a new time?

Hey Kensie,

As I would also love to see myself having a Devderby MoPad account I have
requested for one ;)

Jokes apart, I like your idea of trying to brainstorm the answers async- I
would create a staging etherpad with some questions and then share it with
the community.

As for the timings I personally would like to push it a couple of hours
later but then again everyone has his/her own schedule.

Recently I had the misfortune of being flooded by some '+1' mails from
several mailing lists' members and you asking for suggestions on meeting
schedule may just cause that- I really don't want this thread to get
overrun by those kind of mails. Maybe you can consider using this tool[1]
to take people's opinion and then decide yourself.

Accounts approved!

Yes, if enough people need a new meeting time then I'll use doodle to pick
a new time.
