Hi all,

I wanted to send out an email concerning events organized by
l10n-drivers, localizer selection criteria for those & All-Hands Work
Weeks and a follow up to the announcement of the new Participation
Leaders program announced in Monday's Project Meeting
--https://air.mozilla.org/mozilla-weekly-project-meeting-20150831/

As many (if not all) of you know, the l10n-drivers have made it a
priority to meet (in person) with members from each of the 90 l10n teams
actively shipping Firefox. We've both leveraged regional community
events and organized l10n hackathons to accomplish this, and by doing
this, have been able to meet with members of 72 l10n teams so far this
year. We've enjoyed having the opportunity and spending time learning
from you.

With l10n hackathons that we organize we're tasked with selecting
localizers to invite. Where possible, we'll invite a full l10n team to a
regional hackathon. When we're unable to invite a full l10n team to a
regional hackathon, we work with that l10n team to determine who to
invite according to a set of criteria:

- Who is most actively participating in l10n for products or web
projects in the l10n community?
- Who is a new, passionate localizer in the l10n community that has not
yet attended a Mozilla event and could benefit from one on one
mentoring/training?
- Who has a unique perspective on Mozilla and l10n that could help
localizers look at things in a different light?

We follow a similar process for All-Hands Work Weeks, asking ourselves
the questions above, as well as the following:

- Who is most engaged in specific l10n infrastructure projects (e.g.,
transvision, Pootle dev, etc.)?
- Who will be able to represent a particular l10n perspective when
involved in cross-functional area meetings (e.g., who can help us push
for the FxOS team to make RTL a higher priority)?
- Who is tuned into the global l10n community and can represent their
viewpoints in l10n conversations?
- Who is currently working in l10n and other functional areas of Mozilla
and would benefit from meeting with multiple teams in a Work Week?
- Who can participate best within the l10n agenda and goals that we hope
to accomplish during this specific Work Week?

We support the new Participation Leaders program and hope that many of
you (at least one from each l10n team) will apply to be part of it. We
will be part of the application review process as well. During that
process, we'll apply our selection criteria (mentioned above) for
All-Hands Work Weeks to those of you who apply for the program. Since
we'll review applications to the program, we (l10n-drivers) cannot
provide letters of recommendation for the program. It would be a
conflict of interest to do so. Instead, we ask that you "tap on the
shoulder" of your fellow localizers, both within your l10n community and
in others, to write you a letter of recommendation. In that way, there
will be no conflict of interest on our part and all applications can be
equally evaluated.

We look forward to seeing a flood of localizer applications to this
program. If any of you have questions about any of this, please feel
free to ask. We're always interested in improving our selection criteria
for these opportunities and we attempt to improve and iterate where
we're falling short. Feel free to reach out to us if you have ideas on
how we can iterate and improve here.

Thanks for your help,
Jeff
