As part of our ongoing campaign to nicely integrate Thunderbird with Ubuntu Unity, we're proud to present Unity Launcher integration for Thunderbird!

Interested?  Come check out the announcement at http://mozillalabs.com/messaging/2011/03/14/more-ubuntu-unity-integration-for-thunderbird/

Please leave your feedback here!  Thanks!

As a 55 year old convert to Ubuntu, I was thrilled to hear that Ubuntu is moving to increase integration for Thunderbird.  In my opinion, Thunderbird offers a superior product as compared to Evolution.  I can only hope that is the beginning of an even larger transition that will see the full integration of Thunderbird as the default e-mail program for Ubuntu.  Great news!

That's my hope, too.  ;)

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi,

Is the extension compatible with thunderbird 3.3 only ? Natty is shipping with thunderbird 3.1.9 so it won't install.

Komuta:

Yep - the extension is compatible with TB 3.3+ only.  While Ubuntu Natty will ship with 3.1.9, you can still try out 3.3:

http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/03/install-latest-version-thunderbird-ubuntu-10-10-maverick-meerkat/

(Instructions are for Maverick, but if you get to the Software Center, all other instructions apply for Natty)

Let me know how it works for you!

Hi, I'm getting some trouble to get the extension working!
I installed Thunderbird (shredder) 3.3 and it works but not the extension.
No right click and nothing is displayed over the launcher icon.
I'm up to date on Natty.
What should I check?
Thanks a lot.

Hm - that problem seems to be cropping up a lot. :/

First of all, I need to know if the other half of the extension is
working. When you receive new mail, does it display the count in the
launcher?

Also, have you restarted Unity since you installed the extension? If
not, try logging out and logging back in. Unfortunately, alteration
to .desktop files in Unity requires that Unity restart in order to
take effect.

Let me know, and we'll go from there. Thanks,

-Mike

Hi Mike,
thanks for your answer! I'll be very happy if we could make it work!

I think the extension doesn't work at all... There is no count displayed in the launcher.
I do have restarted Unity, and from yesterday I've restarted my computer and it still doesn't work.
I've tried to disable the "Global Menu Bar integration 0.7", but no effects...

Help/About gives me : Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0.1pre) Gecko/20110413 Thunderbird/3.3a4pre
Unity Launcher integration version is 0.3

I noticed that my icon for the launcher is not the standard thunderbird one; it's a white envelop with a wheel (?) inside!

Hope it helps..

Hi Mike, tks for you work.
I'm using Natty and as reported from others the default Thunderbird version is 3.1.9
I got the extension (version 0.1) working with thunderbird 3.1.9 but there are some problem with localization (I reported a bug on Launchpad). I don't want to swith to version 3.3
Are you planning to backport the extension to 3.1.9 so anyone with a stock Unity installation can use it? If yes, I can help you in testing

Tks for your time
Giovanni

Apologies for the late reply!

I recently bumped the compatibility of the Unity Launcher extension to
work with libunity4 - can you update the extension, and see if that
helps at all?

Let me know,

Absolutely - thanks for the bug report!

Unfortunately, there are currently no plans to backport my extensions
to 3.1.9 - the
primary reason being that the library that my extension uses to
interact with the
launcher and messaging menu (js-ctypes) is not available before TB
3.3.

> If yes, I can help you in testing

TB 3.3 will (hopefully!) be available to you sooner rather than later,
and then maybe I can
take you up on that offer. :)

Thanks for your feedback!

Tks Mike.
I found today this interesting post from Andrea Azzarone

http://www.ubuntusecrets.it/2011/04/integrare-thunderbird-in-unity-messaging-menu-launcher-e-altro-ancora/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UbuntuSecrets+%28Ubuntu+Secrets%29

He explains howto install TB 3.3 and integrate it with unity, I think ?
ll upgrade soon :)

Ciao, Giovanni

Hi Mike,

Here's my input:

I have Thunderbird 3.3 (Shredder 3.3 Mail/News from ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa repository) installed. I added the Unity integration addon, but I don't get the additional options on the 'right-click' of the launcher. I do see unread-count when a new message comes in.

I don't see a thunderbird.desktop (or tunderbird-3.3.desktop, which is what was created in /usr/share/applications when I installed Thunderbird from the PPA). That may explain why the context-menu options are missing. However, I am not sure what needs to be done so that the .desktop file is created.

Thanks,
Mahesh.

Mahesh:

Excellent - thank you for the feedback!

I've heard a number of reports about the context menu not working. I
think I'm narrowing in on the problem, and should have a fix released
sometime this week.

Thanks!

I use this method

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install thunderbird-3.3

but it installed something called Shreeder 7.0a1 which is incompatible with all the xpi, including Ubuntu Unity Integration :-(

Any idea?

Hi Vincent,

Shredder is the codename for the "trunk" version of Thunderbird. A
recent change in the numbering has happened as of yesterday, so we'll
all need to adjust our addons to match the new numbering scheme. Thanks
for your patience,

jonathan

Hey Vincent:

Yeah, Jonathan is right. I'll be checking and updating the version
compatibility today. Thanks!

Mike

I am running Thunderbird 5b1, I just installed Unity Launcher Intergration 0.4, then restarted Ubuntu 11.04.

When I right click the TB icon I don't get anything new, also new emails are not indicated.

Thanks,

John

Hey, thanks for the bug report!

Yeah, I've gotten a few bug reports about this one. Unity Launcher
needs a little bit of love - I'll hopefully get to it later this week
or early the next.

In the meantime, you can follow this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unitylauncher-extension/+bug/772845

Thanks,
