Hi all,

To improve the usefulness of our community phonebook, the Mozillians team [1] wants to better recognize contributions of Mozillians. The first part of that is to allow users to make their profiles public so they can share their information and accomplishments. This functionality can be achieved using privacy controls, which has been a planned feature since the start of the phonebook project.

To respect the privacy of a Mozillian, existing data will remain viewable to vouched Mozillians only and *no* data will be public by default. A user must change their privacy settings in order to make any of their data public. Additionally, we are providing granular controls so a user can choose which fields will be public. For example, a user may choose to make their name, profile photo, IRC name, and skills public.

Please review the privacy controls proposal [2] and share your feedback. We are aiming to launch an initial version of privacy controls at the end of March, so please provide feedback by March 1.

Once privacy controls are released, we'll be able to add new ways to recognize contributions such as displaying Open Badges [3] or listing achievements. We're excited to give profiles more value to Mozillians.

Thanks,
William

This is great to see! :-)

I spent a bit of time working on how it might be possible to provide a sensible UI for a complex set of privacy choices in this scenario (which will get more complex the more levels you have; the design accounts for 4 already in versions 1 and 2).

My working UI mockup is here:

Please focus on the mechanics, not the prettiness! I think a drag-drop solution for setting the visibility of fields might work well.
