For example, for "Friend of the Tree", we would probably want 5 or 6
people with the ability to grant that badge to someone, in case Asa is
sick one week or away on vacation, etc.

Also, if we could enable something like "anyone with this badge can
also bestow this badge", then badges could almost become viral, groups
could become self-sustaining and perpetuating, etc.

Not sure how the groups thing would work, precisely. Groups defined
by badges are one thing, but there are probably also simple groups
that might be needed. Like "Module owners + peers" etc, that we
wouldn't necessarily want to associate strictly with badges?

One nothing I've got on my TODO list is of "delegates" - that is, you create a badge and then add other people to it as delegates who can create and approve nominations along with you. I might add the ability to let them edit the badge, too, but delegating approval was the main thing.

Hmm, good idea - I'll add that to my TODO.

I'll need to think about that a bit... I'd actually just taken groups out of the app, since I'm hoping to push more identity / friends / messaging social features out to other services that already do a good job of it.

I'm wondering how much of this could be done sort of ad-hoc with tags? That is, tag your own profile to claim lightweight membership in a group.

Make that "one thing" :)
