Hi Everyone,
I am glad to see Mozilla showing more interest in Africa. It's always been interesting in getting more people in Africa involved in its community activities though. I am Michael, and I hosted POSSE SA (see http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_South_Africa) in 2010. All effort to run similar bootcamp in Nigeria (see http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_Nigeria) last year proved abortive. Here is my correspondence with William Quiviger - http://pastebin.mozilla.org/1525195

A lot of planning went into it. We already had over 30 academics and students sign up for the bootcamp, and William was going to be one of the instructors, because we intended teaching a Mozilla curriculum (as shown in the wiki page). Here is a screenshot of some of the applicants - http://i.imgur.com/t5zpA.png.

I ran into this google group hours ago and wanted to share the awesome plan with you. POSSE is Red Hat sponsored, but it's changed its "modus operandi." Given that we have people wanting to learn about Mozilla and get involved in its activities, would Mozilla Africa want to jump on this opportunity (perhaps to start Mozilla Nigeria)?

I am happy to discuss this idea with anyone interested.

Regards,
Michael.

Hey all,

is there a reason why we're using a mozilla-africa google group and not a mozila-africa Mozilla mailing list?

Would make sense to be listed here, no? https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo

William

Hey Michael,

It would be great to startup a Mozilla Community in Nigeria. I'd definitely be upto sharing some pointers on how we managed in setting up our community in Kenya and perhaps build on that to start one in Nigeria.

POSSE Nigeria sounds like a great platform for potential contributors who can be Mozilla pioneers in Nigeria, so how are the plans for this year coming up so far...dates and stuff?

@William, I could look up into requesting for a list for MozAfrica, there's definitely a sizable number of contributors to warrant for one.

POSSE Nigeria won't longer be taking place. In the past, POSSE instructors go to institutions to teach the OSS skills and best practices. But Red Hat now invites POSSE registered participants over to its HQ for the training. That's why I said POSSE has changed its "modus operandi." Since we have academics and students wanting to learn/participate in FoSS in Nigeria, why don't we go and teach them. This is a good opportunity for us.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Michael

You may want to reach out to Oo Nwoye out in Lagos. He is a Mozilla WebFWD Scout, founder of Gbedu FM and also very active in the local tech community.

Hi Dees,
Thank you for the contact. But I am pitching the idea to the Mozilla Africa group with anticipation that they will support the event. Nwoye might come join us during the event.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Adeyeye,

Do let us know how we can help. I can start-up a planning page for this on Mozilla's wiki and assist you in getting some Mozilla swag for the event as well.

I'm not sure if you already have a venue in mind though I think Nwoye can assist in getting one as well. I'll send you an email with him cced over the possible next steps to make this happen.

cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,
That would be great. We already have a venue. Sure, you can help move some of the contents from http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_Nigeria. And I am happy to send you the list of registered participants.

I would suggest July 16-18 for the new event date.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Everyone,
A quick look at POSSE SA at http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_South_Africa would show that Red Hat sent three instructors to the event. I have spoken with William Quiviger about becoming one of the instructors for the event in Nigeria (we can't call it POSSE NG, I think), and he accepted it.

I think both of us might be instructors unless Mozilla wants a third person to join us. How does the community want to support the event apart from the swag packs? I would like to see Mozilla or the community financing a large chunk of the expenses, if not all.

Here is our expenses for POSSE SA - http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE_South_Africa_Planning#Budget, which Red Hat bore.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Everyone,
We've been quiet on the below request. Any other contributions to it.

Michael.

Hi Everyone,
I was asking earlier today if anyone else wanted to contribute to the correspondence. I have moved the event page to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla_Nigeria

I am one of the instructors, so also William Quiviger. The two of us could run the course in Nigeria, though three instructors came here (South Africa) in 2010.

I would really like to get response from the community about the event, most notably on financial support.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Michael,

The event's page is great and we can go on working on it with time. Could we linkup over chat from Thursday next week to discuss more about the event. Regarding William's participation as an instructor, the last time I spoke to him, I was under the impression he wouldn't be able to make it to Nigeria, William, could you kindly clarify.

I've also started a pad [1] on stuff we could talk about over chat. Do populate it with other stuff you'd like us to discuss. So let me know if next week Thursday onwards will work for you.

Hi Alex,
Sure, What time would it be next Thursday? William is yet to let me know if he won't be able to travel to Nigeria. I thought he was the second instructor. I would really need a support. I developed the TransferHTTP extension (at http://transferhttp.mozdev.org) and taught an extension development course sometime in 2010 (see http://archive.p2pu.org/webcraft/web-browser-extension-dev). So, I can still teach the Mozilla Technologies, but it would be nice to have one or two other instructors - an evangelist (and a techie) - there too.

I am 'ccing' a representative of one of the Nigerian tertiary institutions; she will likely be joining us in the meeting in case there are a couple of things we need to know or we want them to do for us. And I will soon start populating the pad with ideas.

Regards,
Michael.

Hi Michael,

Just to clarify, I will NOT be able to travel to Nigeria, for the same reasons as last time - the French foreign ministry strongly advises French nationals not to travel to Nigeria and hence, I cannot get clearance from my manager to attend the event. I thought I had sent you an email explaining to you this, but I guess I didn't or it fell through the cracks. Logistics aside, I don't have a strong technical background so even if I could go, I don't think I would be a suitable instructor.

What I can do is help you find someone to go in my stead. Alex Wafula has a strong technical background and I believe he could make a great instructor but I don't know to what degree he would be available to attend the event.

Alex, what do you think?

William

Hey William,

Sure, I'd most definitely be able to attend this. Michael, these are the dates, right? July 16 - 18, 2012
Looking forward to discuss the setting of the event in more detail this Thursday.
