Hi everyone,

I have come to the conclusion that I have no further intention of
maintaining moz-hocr-edit, the hOCR editor extension for Firefox [0].
Last year, an incompatible change in Firefox broke the extension [1],
and more recently Firefox has significantly changed its API for
extension developers [2]. I have not used or worked on moz-hocr-edit in
several years (in fact, the most recent release was over five years
ago), so I believe it is best for me to retire as its maintainer. It
was a fun ride, but it is over for me.

It would of course be wonderful if somebody were to fix these issues and
maintain the project in the future. I encourage anybody interested to
do so.

Jim

Hi, Jim!

My name is Janderson and I'm searching about any API or tool that does search keyword texts in JPEG images from  sncanned old newspapers, magazines and so on. Could I use your plugin to do that?

Thanks!

Hi Janderson,

The plugin will not do this, but an OCR tool should be able to help with
the task. I haven't used any recently so am not sure what is best, but
you could start by looking at OCRopus

Hi All,

As a work-around it seems like it might be possible to keep using  moz-hocr-edit in an older version of Firefox. E.g.  version 10.0.12esr from 2013. I described my own experiment in this direction here... https://github.com/garrison/moz-hocr-edit/issues/1#issuecomment-287972871 Many thanks to Jim for all the work he put into this. (I'm not a programmer, ...can't fix code.)  Dennis
