Hi, moving the conversation to the list.

Hi,

My name is Giovanny, i am a Mozillian (https://mozillians.org/en-US/u/Gioyik/), and i love Dev Derby's. I was the winner of September Dev Derby (Geolocation) of 2012 (when i was 15 years old), now I am 16 years old. I have been promoting the participation in the Dev Derby's, and there are some people now sending demos and participating in Dev Derby's from my country (Colombia).

I have some suggestions for Dev Derby's:

  • Now, with the coming soon launch day of FirefoxOS, the people that won the Dev Derby of the month, should get a FirefoxOS Device (maybe a Geeksphone). It's more cheaper than an Android - Samsung, and at the same time, we are promoting the Web in Smartphones.
  • It's possible integrate a way that demos in MDN, can be send to the Firefox Marketplace? This could be good and interesting for Webapps developers. The demos in DevDerby are so awesome! :)
  • Could be possible organize Dev Derby's in real life? (Away from the Keyboard), i have been organized Hackatons, AppDays, and Workdays in Colombia. And in May 18, we have a Workshop organized by Mozilla Engagemnt Team of course. So i think that could be insteresting organize some Dev Derby's AFTK. To me, this idea will inspire more the participation of people in this activity. I can help to organize Dev Derby's in my country and the Mozilla Hispano Community will help to reproduce this events in most of the countries in Latin America.
  • This month the Dev Derby is about "getUserMedia", is possible that one person good in the Topic, give a talk (streaming) and people following the streaming could make questions, like a Q&A session? So important to new developers and people insterested in send demos.

the thing with the Geeksphones, is the limited Stock, but could be great for the future. To me is an important point to considerate for the people that win the first place of the Dev Derby. And thanks to be agree with this part of the suggestion.

The integration to the Marketplace could be in this way, when you send a demo to participate in any Dev Derby, yo could have the opportunity to upload the .manifest file, an the people that review the webapps in the Firefox Marketplace, will decide if is a good weapp or not for the Marketplace. But the thing is that definitely, this option, will increase the participation of developers and the number of good apps in the Marketplace.

Majken, so cool, i sent the request to join at the group. I love the Workshops and Hackdays. For the events, could be possible that we plan a World Tour? For Example:

Dev Derby World Tour

Derby Spaces:
  • Toronto - July 28
  • Bogota - August 1
  • Rio de Janiero - August 18
  • London - September 5
  • Poland - September 21

* Those are random and dates to example my idea

Derby topics:

  • getUserMedia
  • Mobile
  • CSS
  • WebRTC

* Possibly we can use the topic in the Dev Derby of the month

Why a world tour?

People enjoy new faces (people from other countries) and hack, so we could have the opportunity to change the way and the participation of the people in Dev Derbys. Share with developers is amazing (new and experts) and the Dev Derby is the place to enjoy and create a better web. A world tour will do expect at the people something amazing and the Dev Derby will be the topic around the world (imagine the social media) and before this, local communities will organize events like Workshop, Hackatons, App Days to participate in the Derby of month.

What's next after the World tour?

People exiting in Dev Derbys, more demos per Dev Derby month, more Webapps, more Mozillians!, more expansion of FirefoxOS and OpenWeb, more people interested in document in MDN their knowledge. The positive things are infinite.

Awesome if we can record and share some things, Could we create a document or share a Etherpad and with help of MozHacks twitter account share it to all the people and that they post and send his questions, and after  that, select the more interesting questions and the expert people answer it, is possible?

I started been a volunteer in Mozilla Hispano, now i am a core member and volunteer coding for B2G and webapps. And i am so interested in improve Dev Derby's and get involved with the Developer Engagement of Mozilla. So what you think? Do you agree with my suggestions? Could i help in something? There are some things planned for the future of Dev Derbys?

Regards,
Gio

Hi Giovanny,

It looks like we will have a remote presentation this time around (fingers crossed). We should see about sharing it to a wider audience.

A World Tour is a good idea. I had been hoping to get other cities running these events regularly, I was thinking it would be simple enough to coach one other city to host it, then when they are confident we could each host one other city, etc.  It would be good for promoting the events to have a World Tour where we put a focus on the event in one city each month, also help to boost attendance in that city.

Regardless of the World Tour, are you interested in planning one locally? I'd be happy to help mentor you through it!

Hi Majken,

I think that the World Tour is an amazing idea to increase the participation in Dev Derbys. I am core member in the Mozilla Hispano Community that is conformed by countries like Colombia, Spain, Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and others. I can announce it and recruit people to Host in their countries Dev Derby events, no problem for me (I will host one in my contry, of course). For me the important thing, is create a plan o something with a main idea, for example the World Tour. Something that involucrate Mozilla Staff and Mozilla Communities to increase the participation in Dev Derbys.

Someone participate in the FirefoxOS WorkWeek a few weeks ago? it was in different countries but with the same idea, work in FirefoxOS code (Mozilla Staff, local Volunteers and TEF Reps). Thats what i like with the World Tour, the difference is that we are going to work with non-Mozillians too (indepent developers). I have been thinking in something like this:

// This is an example, is not confirmed
Dev Derby World Tour:

May - getUserMedia
  • Peru, 18 May
  • San Francisco, 27 May

June - WebGL II

  • Colombia, 5 June
  • London, 21 June

July - File API

  • Spain, 13 July
  • Brazil, 24 July

And so important have a cool organization (to code) and posibbly Swag like MDN Rex T-shirts and stickers, maybe some bags or mugs about MDN, a lot of things related with Dev Derby and Technical documentation in MDN. If Mozilla was able to make AppDays around the world, why not events to promote Dev Derbys and the future of the web?

What you think?

Regards,

Gio

I agree, Dev Derby swag would be great. Planning a World Tour would help set that in motion. I like the idea, I just wonder if it would be better to try and have a few more cities hosting Dev Derby Workshops before we pitch the investment. John can give better feedback on how much buy in we need to demonstrate or if we could run with the idea right away.

I do appreciate the effects of having a coordinated plan. I didn't get very good turn out to my events until we had the FxOS App Day here. The coordinated effort helped extend our reach. Many people who came to the App Day would have come to the Dev Derbies if they'd known about it. We invited App Day participants to the next Dev Derby and saw a great turn out. Other cities that had App Days could do the same, invite App Day participants to the Dev Derby workshops. I did suggest this to the organizing team as a good follow-up activity. It got positive feedback.

Maybe we can make a list of cities who had App Days who are interested in hosting Dev Derbies, and then use that as the basis for planning the Tour.

I am going to announce the idea in the Mozilla Hispano mailing list, i will send the list as soon as possible with the countries interested in host a event to make real the World Tour.

John could you tell us that we have to make real the World Tour? or which details we need to complete this?

I love the idea of a World Tour! Please let me know what support you would need to make that happen, including how much and what type of swag you need.

I have many different projects going on right now, but will try my hardest to help out however I can. In the meantime, please forgive me for my slow responses.

We have some news about the future of the Dev Derby. It's going to do a relaunch and it would be awesome to plan a World Tour to celebrate the relaunch. It will be in November. More info coming soon, then we can start planning!

Hi Majken,

Are awesome news, I have some questions:

* There are some relevant details about Dev Derby relaunch?
** Maybe new site or design for Dev Derby's?

* There's a team planning that relaunch?
** Could I get involved with this relaunch?

* What are the changes with this relaunch?

Sorry for not continue with this thread those days ago. I was traveling to some countries and cities planning the FirefoxOS Launch in Colombia. Now I am a little bit able to continue with Dev Derby Topic. I contacted some people from different countries to host an event for the World Tour. The countries interested are (100% Confirmed):

* Colombia
* Argentina
* Spain
* Mexico
* Bolivia
* Venezuela
* Brazil (not yet confirmed, but they will say yes, is 100% possible)

I can make the structure for the event, I will send you an idea of the logistics for the World Tour. I would like to have other countries listed as interested in Host a event for the World Tour, maybe any MozSpace or countries in EU and Asia. Do you have any contact to increase the list of countries? (Active Mozilla Reps, mailing list, etc...)

Regards,
Gio

Yes, these are the details that will be forthcoming shortly.

Please make an etherpad for your ideas for the World Tour so that it will be easier to share. We'll be doing the initial planning in a different discussion group (which needs to be set up, that's why the wait).

Gio
