Volkswagen is expanding its electric lineup even further. The company was relatively early to EVs with the ID.4, and since then, it has launched a series of additional models in various regions. Now, Volkswagen is prepping the launch of the new ID.7, an electric sedan that could rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3.
The ID.7 does still look modern, though. It has a light bar across the front, connected to the headlights, and another on the back that connects the taillights. The headlights are slim and stylish, and the car features curved glass along the top.
Like the Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.7 is expected to come in a few different trim levels. For starters, there will be the ID.7 base model, along with ID.7 Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus trims. The base model of the car will offer a single-motor configuration with 282 horsepower. Other variants, including a dual-motor, all-wheel drive variant, will be released at a later date. The main difference between these different trim levels will come down to performance and range.
VW said the production ID.7, which will be revealed in the second quarter of this year, will be influenced by the ID.Aero concept first shown in China in 2022. The camouflaged prototype VW brought to CES has the same general shape as the ID.Aero. It's a streamlined sedan that VW claims will have up to 435 miles of range as measured on the somewhat lenient European WLTP testing cycle.
Volkswagen's growing family of ID-badged electric cars has a new mascot: the ID. Buzz. Inspired by the vintage air-cooled Bus models and previewed by a close-to-production concept unveiled in 2017, the heritage-laced van offers an electric powertrain, an eye-catching design, plus an interior that's high-tech and almost lounge-like. I tested a Buzz prototype in England in February 2022 and walked away impressed, and time driving a regular-production model in and around Copenhagen, Denmark, confirmed these impressions. This was worth the wait.
Design and interior
While you can tell that the Buzz is on the same branch of the Volkswagen family tree as the split- and bay-window Buses prized by hippies decades ago, designers decided not to go full-retro as they did with the New Beetle released in 1997. The headlights aren't round, for example, and they're much higher than the original van's. It's the same story out back: The lights are horizontal, located right below the big hatch's window, and connected by a light bar. This is intentional -- Volkswagen aimed to echo the original model without cloning it.
In terms of proportions, the Buzz is pretty spot on. The front end isn't entirely flat and the front doors are positioned behind the front wheels rather than over them, but the design is as close to the old van's as modern regulations allow. The Buzz variant that I drove in Denmark measures 185.5 inches long, 78.1 inches wide, and 76.8 inches tall, so it's about as long as a Tiguan but around 10 inches taller and five inches wider. This is what Volkswagen refers to as the short-wheelbase model, and it's not coming to the United States. We'll get a long-wheelbase model that hasn't been unveiled yet; it should look just like the European-spec model but with more space between the front and rear axles.

The ID.7 is the first MEB model with a completely new, highly efficient drivetrain. With 282 horsepower (210 kW), it is the most powerful and highest-torque electric motor in a Volkswagen EV model so far. This power variant is used in the ID.7 independently of the chosen battery size. The APP550 power unit was developed with Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel (Germany) and is also produced there.
The new electric drivetrain has been optimized above all for energy efficiency. Depending on the battery size, Volkswagen estimates that, depending on trim, WLTP ranges of up to 435 miles (700 km) and DC fast charging capacities of up to about 200 kW will be possible. EPA-estimated range is not yet available and will be released closer to the North American launch date.
The ID.7 is 195.3 inches long and was designed on aerodynamic principles. Its roof slopes elegantly to the rear, like a coupe, and contributes to an excellent drag coefficient of 0.23 depending on equipment. The long wheelbase and short overhangs create plenty of space in the interior for all occupants.

With the new massage seats and the available electro-chromic dimming panoramic sunroof, the ID.7 offers equipment options that are otherwise present only in premium competitors. The new panoramic sunroof with smart glass can be switched between opaque and transparent settings by touch control. Like many other functions in the ID.7, the roof can also be operated by means of natural voice commands, using the new IDA voice assistant.
The optional front seats are also a new development: for the first time in a Volkswagen, they offer adaptive Climatronic cooling or heating with a drying function. The range of options is rounded off by a 700-watt sound system from Harman Kardon: 14 high-end loudspeakers, including a front center speaker and a trunk-mounted subwoofer, provide an impressive audio experience.

The ID.7 went on sale in Europe and 2023, and was originally scheduled to launch in North America in 2025. That's no longer the plan, although VW's brief announcement did not specify how long the ID.7 would be delayed from reaching these shores. A new launch date wasn't specified.
Unveiled in 2023, but previewed by the ID.Aero concept shown the previous year, the ID.7 shares the MEB architecture with other VW EVs like the ID.4 crossover and ID.Buzz van, but clothes it in sleeker bodywork that bucks the current trend toward taller and more rugged-looking vehicles. In addition to the hatchback, an ID.7 Tourer wagon is also available in Europe, but isn't slated for the U.S.
At 195.3 inches long and 73.3 inches wide, with a 116.8-inch wheelbase, the ID.7 is nearly as long as a Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, or Mercedes-Benz EQE, but about as wide as a Model 3 or Hyundai Ioniq 6. And at 60.6 inches tall, it stands higher than just about any sedan.
When VW announced the ID.7 for the U.S., specifications included a single motor sending 282 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, and a battery pack with 82 kwh gross capacity and 77 kwh of usable capacity, equivalent to the larger of the two packs currently available in the ID.4. A larger 91-kwh pack (85-kwh) pack is available in Europe, and dual-motor all-wheel drive is thought to be in this model's future.
"We remain committed to electric mobility," a VW press release said. But while the ID.4 gets an update for 2024, the delay of the ID.7 means the brand's next new EV for the U.S. will be the ID.Buzz, which is scheduled to go on sale in the fourth quarter.
